Maybe not the saddest lyrics, but the music itself hits it.
If you ever go down south they play it still all the time on the radio

Maybe not the saddest lyrics, but the music itself hits it.
The mash theme song
Through early morning fog I see
Visions of the things to be
The pains that are withheld for me
I realize and I can see
That suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please
The game of life is hard to play
I'm gonna lose it anyway
The losing card I'll someday lay
So this is all I have to say
That suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please
The sword of time will pierce our skins
It doesn't hurt when it begins
But as it works its way on in
The pain grows stronger... watch it grin
That suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please
A brave man once requested me
To answer questions that are key
Is it to be…

Metallica "One" is the saddest song of all time. Its about a guy in WW1 who gets his arms and legs blown off, and he loses his sight and hearing. The doctors think he went mad because he would just bang his head on his pillow all day. After some time an army friend of his visits him and realizes his banging on the pillow was Morse Code for SOS "Help". Later he only says "kill me", over and over again. He was trapped inside his own mind, with no concept of time and he had no companionship, always in pain.
The song itself is a true masterpiece. I dont use that word lightly. Listen to the end and you will be rewarded.
maybe not the saddest song, but probably one of the most inspired. Chris Cornell wrote it for his friend and roommate Andy Wood, who O.D'd when he was only about 20 or so... he had been the lead singer for Mother Love Bone. Cornell in the song, advises Wood's girlfriend she needs to move on...
