Because policies of moderation and compromising with the right haven't worked.

While I still suspsect (and hope)the Democrats will nominate Biden, the fact is, electing moderates is not the way to win elections. Nobody gets excited about moderates. Just ask Hillary, Romney, McCain, Kerry, Gore and Dole. They all ran as the "Moderate" alternative to the partisans, and they all lost, bigly.

The better question is, why is socialism popular now. And the answer to that is that Capitalism has turned into a big shit sandwich for too much of the population.
