Most Democrats thought Trump was breaking the law simply by declaring his candidacy. As far as the electors are concerned he did nothing that dozens of people before him haven't done too. The legality of it or the illegality of it is not fully defined. The precedent being set by judicial activism on this scale is a snowball rolling downhill that will crush everything in it's path regardless of party affiliation. Trump is his own worst enemy....
