When they were presented with irrefutable evidence that one of the groups they claimed as a right wing extremist group wasn't, they ignored that and one of their members went and shot the place up. Some have realized that a paternalistic form of racism that diminishes the responsibilities of a group due to the concept that they are too 'low IQ' to take care of themselves is itself a form of racism, even if they have good motivations. This is applied to the left quite often because it underlies many of their assumptions such as 'enforcing the law is racist' or 'Voter ID is racist'. Underlying both assertions is the assumption that minority races cannot get an ID or that they are predisposed to break the law. These are racially bigoted assumptions and therefor racist.

2. The SPLC has a long history of classifying conservative religious groups as 'hate' groups if they maintain their traditional beliefs that homosexual behavior is a sin. The SPLC has no tolerance for disagreement on social issues and displays all the hallmarks of 'hating' conservative religious groups, hence they are a hate group vrs conservative religions.
