NEWARK, Del. An unexpected win by a Tea Party candidate here has given Democrats hope of winning a seat that Republicans were once confident they could count in their column.
No, not the Senate seat Christine ODonnell is running for (though they look set to win that, too), but the states sole seat in the House of Representatives which, unlike the Senate seat, has long been held by a Republican.
It is turning out to be a hard slog for the Republican businessman, Glen Urquhart, who is running against John Carney, the Democratic lieutenant governor.
One reason is simple math. About two-thirds of registered voters in Delaware are Democrats. New Castle County, where more than half the population lives, is heavily Democratic. The Republican who has held the seat for years, Michael N. Castle, kept it by appealing to moderate Democrats and independents, something Mr. Urquhart, a former Reagan administration appointee favored by conservatives, does not seem to be doing.
