Well then even on those terms it doesn't work. When Lincoln defeated Douglas, the latter travelled around speaking on behalf of the President-elect to make the case for preserving the Union. And then when negotiations were failing advised Lincoln to increase his forces against the Confederacy.

Rump on the other hand hijacked a weak political party with a circus sideshow, complete with "Little Marcos" and "Low energies" and "would anyone vote for that face" and "pathologicals" and the size of his Little Willie and a special Alfred Hitchcock me-me-me entrance. Lincoln did zero of that. So no, no comparison at all.

Lincoln had tapped McClellan to head the Army of the Potomac—the main Union army in the East—in July 1861 after the disastrous Union defeat at the First Battle of Bull Run, Virginia. McClellan immediately began to build an effective army, and was elevated to general in chief after Winfield Scott resignedthat fall.

McClellan drew praise for his military initiatives but quickly developed a reputation for his arrogance and contempt toward the political leaders in Washington, D.C. After being named to the top army post, McClellan began openly associating with Democratic leaders in Congress and showing his disregard for the Republican administration.




To his wife,McClellan wrote that Lincoln was “nothing more than a well-meaning baboon,” and Secretary of State William Seward was an “incompetent little puppy.”

Conservatives hated Lincoln. Liberals loved him.
In the 19th century, Republicans were the liberal party and the Democrats were conservative, as shown by the fact that Southern people (conservatives) backed Lincoln's rivals while Northern people (liberals) backed Lincoln.
