I'd say this article's more astute than I would have expected with that headline, though I do disagree profoundly with the headline.

Trump isn't actually changing the party. The base is changing the party. The views of the GOP base and the GOP leadership on, in particular, free trade and immigration, have been in direct opposition for years, and, to its credit, the article nails this point. Unfortunately for the base, every time a republican runs at the federal level, they talk a big game about stemming the flow of illegal immigrants, enforcing border law, and enacting economic policies that put America first. Then they get to DC and immediately go globalist.

Trump just happened to be the first challenger to the entrenched GOP leadership that's been viable enough to take the presidential nomination. He isn't causing a change in the base, he's just a symptom of a long-simmering dissatisfaction finally boiling over.
