The Constitution SPECIFICALLY cedes to the Federal Government the right authority and power to determine whether a State is in fact meeting the demands of the governed people via the TYPE of Government the State has. Succession does in fact equate to insurrection under the terms of the Constitution as written.

Look, just admit that secession was NOT a clear matter prior to the Civil War. States voluntarily joined a union and kept their sovereignty under the Constitution. Before the war, it was VERY MUCH an unclear matter of law.

How is the United States' guarantee to a State to protect that State against "domestic violence" relevant to a State remaining in the Union?

The argument the Union used was loosely based on the preamble stating that the States were entering a "Perpetual Union" the implication being that not only would it would last forever without needing renewal, BUT that the States surrendered the choice to leave. COMPLETE BULLSHIT. Perpetual means that it does not need to be renewed. It does NOT mean "you can't leave."
