Her husband consulted her for her opinion on a lot of issues, and she was there to be involved and observant of international and national situations and peoples. Being the highly intelligent person she is, that experience would have enriched her understanding of politics and diplomacy no end.

So, Obama met and talked to a guy who had been, or was, in the Communist Party. Does that mean that this guy mentored Obama? Does it mean they spoke about Communism? Does it mean Obama agreed with this guy?

So this woman was anti-American because she liked non-American men? Doesn't make sense to me. I've lived abroad quite a bit, I've met plenty of women who will only go out with a foreigner, and not one of them hated their own country. You're making assumptions that don't match.

Sometimes women are looking for something from a man that they don't think they can get from a man from their own country. She became interested in Indonesian culture, well that happens, it's kind of normal.

Whether differing values as a conflict arose because of her interest in Indonesian culture and his of Western culture, or whether they were just two people who really probably weren't right for each other because she had a different outlook on life than he did, can have completely different meanings.
