Republicans are being short sighted

Pandering to the MAGA crowd may help them win with the older, white Christians who fear their loss of power.

But younger Americans and minorities are repulsed by the actions of the far right. They are lost forever

I think the Republicans are very capable of alienating conservatives if they put their mind to it.

The Late John McCain and Mitt Romney were tremendous in doing that. But the key of the LP folks is to expel the base from the Republican Party so they can reassert control.

John McCain was a Maverick. He would back his party but when given a choice between party and his state, he would do what was in the best interest of his state.

Romney is a devout Mormon. As such, he is repulsed by Trump and his antics. He votes accordingly

McCain was willing to betray his party for good press. He thought that would get him in the White House.

There will never be an appeal to unity and cooperation with an unconstitutional white supremacist, out to destroy the nation. Nor can there be. In order for Trump to have targets for his endless "winning", division and polarization are a feature, not a bug, of the Trump Administration. You can't win, unless there is a fight. Trump spent his entire life looking for fights.

"Obama spied on me", "Hillary Clinton" "Joe Biden", the "FBI" - "Democrats" - everybody is out to get Trump. But look who is out to pardon himself and his entire family, and all of his top staffers, past and present, on the way out the door. Something that no President in the history of the nation has ever felt it necessary to do.

Trump has very publically investigated all of his "enemies", including Clinton, Obama, Biden, and their entire families and has yet to succeed in having anyone charged with anything. Just like his entire campaign of law suits to overturn the election. Trump has been long on allegations of impropiety, but has yet to produce a single piece of evidence of ANY Democrat doing any of the things that Trump continues to allege.

Trump had no interest in unity or cooperation with anyone. Trump wanted to go out and WIN every day. Humiliate, denigrate and stomp on someone, or something. Trump wanted to show his "strength" and his "power", and he wanted people to "fear" him.

Every Trump construction project went the same way. Trump would announce the greatest resort ever, using his magic touch to create a luxury experience to cater to the those who can afford it. There would be long delays as Trump tried to presell the property, and off-load his infrastructure costs onto the local government. Trump would take on investors to keep the project afloat during this protracted period, but keeping his name on the building, and requiring a managment contract giving the Trump Corporation charge of running the completed project at a vastly inflated fee, which continued throughout construction.

Successful projects where people bought condos, and created communities, would try to rid themselves of the inept Trump Corporation management of their property by cancelling their managment contracts and Trump would refuse to leave or vacate the property, suing to uphold the management contract, which was negotiated between Trump and his investors and which the current owners were forced to assume on purchase - an arrangement which is common in the condo industry.

What's next for the GOP?

A couple of very interesting pieces this morning. Interestingly, much of what they cover includes what we've been talking about here. The anti-Trump types like the Lincoln Project know damn well that he has a vice-like grip on the party, and will even have to consider running separate candidates, which we haven't really talked about here. The party is so afraid of Trump, in fact, that they're not even engaging in the traditional post-mortem for fear of angering him. Holy crap.

At the same time, they did do better than expected down ticket (or was it the Democrats doing worse than expected?), so that just muddies the waters even more. So what do the next few years look like for the GOP?

Mitt Romney lost by 5 million votes in 2012 and sparked a 100-page RNC autopsy report. Donald Trump lost by 7 million and there isn’t a peep.

Oh, for Trumpsters: Ignore all this, he won, "by a lot", they cheated, he'll stay in office, MAGA.

I don't see how the current itteration of the Republican Party can continue to exist. They have no platform, no plan, they just want to whine about white grievance and do nothing. And they've have utterly abandoned the Constitution in an effort to retain while male dominance of the government and the nation's wealth, at any cost.

When you look at it, Trump didn't manage the affairs of the country at all - other than to cut taxes, and offend your allies. He cut all regulations regardless of their use or purpose causing the quality of both air and water to deteriorate, but it did nothing to improve job creation.

His fiscal policies accelerated the rise of the oligarchs and concentration of wealth at the top, at the expense of an ever shrinking middle class. 8 million people have fallen into poverty since the start of this pandemic, while Trump pushes the nation to get back to work, and tries to cut off aid to the unemployed.

The Republican Party had no platform or 2nd term plan going into the 2020 election, other than whatever Trump decides to do, we're with him. But the electorate, at large, is exhausted and burned out by the chaos in Washington, and by the dysfunction in Congress. Trump really had no plan for after the inauguration either so he just winged it throughout and accomplished very little other than to wreck everything he laid his hands on.

The principle job of government is crisis management, and Republicans are really poor at management of anything. That's why all of the cities are run by Democrats. Look at what passes for crisis management in the pandemic in red states.

Republicans used to have a lot of economic ideas, most of them parroting Milton Friedman and his Chigaco School of Economics free market plan, which eliminated all government regulation of the prices and labour and allowed the "libertarian market" to decide, on the premise that the net result would be an equitable distribution of capital.

Republicans are quick to point to Venzuela, and other South American hellholes as proof positive of the failures of "socialism", but the current economy inequity, poverty and second world nations status of South America is a direct result of Milton Friedman and his capitalism unchained policies. Prices rose, wages dropped, and when the crash came, millions were thrown into poverty, while the rich made out like bandits, using the crashes to further supress wages as desperate people will accept any amount of money rather than starve.

Right now Republicans are trying to cut off unemployment benefits, which Mitch McConnell says will "discourage workers" from taking jobs that pay less than the $2000 a month the government is paying. In Canada, my younger family and friends are complaining they aren't being "allowed" to work, because the $2000 per month isn't really enough to maintain their current lifestyles.

While Americans are trying to get back to "normal", the rest of the world is moving toward what "normal" will look like as we get control of the virus. The Republican Party is trying to end the Republic and establish authoritarian white male rule, to suppress the will of the people. I don't know how you can salvage the GOP from that, or even that you should.

I think the Lincoln Party Republicans need to start their own Party, but one which is working for the good of all of the people, as set out in the Constitution, rather than seeking to pervert the Constitution to the will of the elite. A party with an actual Platform, and programs other than cut taxes, spent money on the military, and put it all on the credit card, because that's not working. Nor is the supression of racial minorities.

I keep bringing this up, but I'm convinced that the current Trumpist iteration of the party is essentially a macro-political version of talk radio. In 2016, he saw that 95% of the energy in party was in those people, not the more moderate Republicans, and he went after them with a vengeance. And he never stopped, it was his entire freaking presidency.

As it turns out, talk radio doesn't translate. It does what it is modeled to do: Create and feed into anger and frustration for ratings.

And you're right, the anti-Trumpsters may need to go for short term pain for long term gain. They may have to just rip the scab off now and go their own way. And I very much wonder how many in the party only voted for Trump because of the (R), and would rather just go the more sane direction.

The Lincoln people may have to burn it down and look long term.

Those like me which is those that supported the Lincoln Project believe the party need a purge and a reset.

The GOP need it next Reagan after Trump doing a poor version of Nixon!
