The Qur'an is the word of God Almighty

Surah Yusuf (Yusuf means Joseph). This is the Surah 12 (Chapter 12) of the Holy Qur'an.


It starts with the usual "In the Name of God, the Most merciful, the Great Merciful" and after that the first verse is:

"A.L.R. These are the symbols (or Verses) of the perspicuous Book."


A L R mean endless things, but one of the things it means is that you are about to read something magnificent and extraordinary, superb and wonderful.

The 3rd verse starts with: "We reveal to thee the most beautiful of stories" (they may be translation mistakes, I did not verify the contents of the website where I took the translation from). This chapter beautifully talks about the wonderful life of Joseph. It features family, trust, jealousy, love (a favourite of today's western movies), tragedy, human marvelousness, heroism, power and kingdom, passionate love, becoming someone in society, just ruling, purity, strategy and tactics, divine intervention, family prestige and glory, triumph, strong friendship with God Almighty and love and intimacy with Him, Allah Almighty (God Almighty).

One of the beauties in this story is the love relationship between Joseph and Zuleikha (her name is not mentioned however in the story).

"With passion did she desire him, and he would have desired her, except that he saw the evidence from his Lord"

"Now is the truth manifest (....) no evil do we know against him (...) he is indeed of those who are ever true and virtous"

God leaves it like this, leaving place for us to think, rather to know that God will unite them, undoubtedly. There did come a time (this is not in the Qur'an), when they married. After that, on one occasion, Joseph called Zuleikha to him, and she was his wife, but she objected. SHe said she love him before she acquired the knowledge of God; but now that she has knowledge of God, what can she possibly have to do with Joseph. Joseph then informed her that there was still greater spiritual benefit in being with him.


Strong friendship with God Almighty, and love and intimacy with Him is also one of the beauties of this Surah.

"For he was one of our servants, sincere and purified"

"When Joseph attained His full manhood, We gave him power and knowledge; thus do We reward those who do right."

"Thus did We give established power to Joseph in the land, to take possession therein as, when, or where he pleased. We bestow of our Mercy on whom We please, and We suffer not, to be lost, the reward of those who do good."

"I only complain of my distraction and anguish to Allah (God), and I know from Allah that which ye know not"

"He cast the shirt over his face, and he forthwith regained clear sight. He said: "Did I not say to you, I know from Allah that which ye know not?"

"O my Lord! Thou hast indeed bestowed on me some power, and taught me something of the interpretation of dreams and events, O Thou Creator of the heavens and the earth! Thou art my Protector in this world and in the Hereafter. Take my soul as one submitting to Thy will (as a Muslim), and unite me with the righteous."


But before all of this, at the beginning of this chapter God tells Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) that He loves him more than anyone else, that He loves him very greatly, that He loves him like no other.

"We relate to thee the most beautiful of stories, in that We reveal to thee this (portion of the) Qur'an"

Having compared the bible story of Joseph in the bibles Genesis with the Quran, I can just about follow the story as described in sura 12. But as far as I can see, anyone who did not know the Genesis story could not possibly make sense of the tale of Joseph, as told in the Quran.

In the bible books of Genesis from chapter thirty seven to chapter fifty. the entire fourteen chapters are about Joseph. There are four hundred and fifty verses about the story in the bible, but in the quran sura 12 there are only one hundred and eleven verses.

The quranic version of the bible story of Joseph is a mumbling, incoherent, ill considered, and inaccurate muddle, and it does not even tell you who Joseph is. It just launches into Josephs dream at verse 4, after three verses that attempt to explain the story is being revealed in Arabic, presumably to make it available to Arabs.

The entire sura is peppered with completely unnecessary references to Allah which clutter the narrative, if you can call it a narrative. Because the bible story is clear and lucid, and rich in detail, and it has a comprehensible flow to it.


Sura 12.4 launches into a description of Josephs dream, with no explanation of who he is or how many brothers he has. What is more the dream described is the second of two dreams that are told in Genesis. But the entire point of the dream is that the eleven stars bowing down to Joseph are his eleven brothers. Genesis explains Josephs family tree so you can realize this, but the Quran says nothing about the matter. The Genesis story also says that Jacob made a coat of many colours for Joseph, and that is why his brothers were jealous of him, but the quran gives no reason or motives for Josephs brothers to hate him. Nor does it explain that Joseph has one other brother named Benjamin who had the same mother as himself, but the other ten brothers are step brothers. Nor does sura 12 explain this issue at any time, including when Joseph sends for him from Egypt.

So when Josephs brothers state at sura 12.8 When they said:" Verily Joseph and his brother are dearer to our father than we are, many though we be. Lo! our father is in plain aberration":
This makes absolutely no sense whatever to anyone that has not read the full account in Genesis.

Later in the story Joseph is put in power in Egypt, but sura 12 says nothing about him filling the granaries for seven years, it simply changes the subject to when his brothers amble into Egypt to trade, (sura 12.58) and it does not explain they are there because it is now during the seven years of famine. Then Joseph ask his brothers to send for a brother of who is a son of their father, this again makes no sense without an explanation of the family background.

How much more obvious can it be that the Quran is plagiarism, and it was taken from the Bible and other earlier sources. It is clear to me that Muhammad had Genesis read to him and sura 12 is his half remembered rehash of the story of Joseph.

And Allah is well acquainted with all things. If ye are on a journey, and cannot find a scribe, a pledge with possession (may serve the purpose). And if one of you deposits a thing on trust with another, let the trustee (faithfully) discharge his trust, and let him fear his Lord; conceal not evidence; for whoever conceals it, his heart is tainted with sin. Umar, may God be well pleased with him, was a staunch enemy of Islam and Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family). Muhammad willed that Islam grow stronger, so he asked God (who is above any form of humanness) that God strengthens Islam either through Umar or through Amr Ibn Hisham. A few time later, Umar came to read some words from Chapter Ta Ha of the Qur'an (Surah 20) and thereafter decided to convert to Islam.


"In the Name of Allah (God), Most Gracious, Most Merciful. Ta Ha. We have not sent down the Qur'an to you (O Muhammad) to be (an occasion) for your distress, but only as an admonition to those who fear (Allah), A revelation from Him Who created the earth and the heavens on high. (Allah) Most Gracious is firmly established on the throne (of authority). To Him belongs what is in the heavens and on earth, and all between them, and all beneath the soil. If you pronounce the word aloud, (it is no matter), for verily He knows what is secret and what is yet more hidden. Allah! there is no god but Him! To Him belong the most Beautiful Names. Has the story of Moses reached you?"

I don't know until what verse Umar read, but these are the first verses.

Umar later became one of the great ones of Islam and he was the one who expanded the kingdom of Islam greatly, setting precedents for later great conquests.
