The kid was very close and had an iron scope. I can't imagine he would miss by THAT far a distance, let alone the shrapnel to fly that far and accurately.

It is easy to imagine. With a cheap "no magnification" red dot optic, on an off the rack, AR at the distance (maybe 135 yards (approx) from firing point to target, aiming at the head and getting a head shot would have been a lucky shot. At that distance, without magnification, many red dots would be bigger than the head target.
The luckiest shot taken, that day was the camera shot that just happened to catch? the bullet in flight, traveling supersonic, passing Trump on stage, before the sound of the report or the crack of the bullet itself exceeding the sound barrier could be heard by anybody in the crowd. Truly amazing.
