Alaska was purchased. Ukranie has no strategic value to the United States. It should not be getting this much international press.
The wording of the treaty that 'sold' Alaska to the U.S. was 'Sold for 100 years'.
The Russians interpret that as a 100 lease, the U.S. as permanently sold.
The wording was done in such a way that took advantage of the difference in the two languages, and each of the diplomats that negotiated could go home and make everyone believe that they got what they wanted.
Apparently, they couldn't have cared less about what was to happen in 100 years.
