US public schools are soooo bad, that a Ukrainian teenager that escaped the war wants to return to the Ukraine after being subjected to the violence and bullying in US public schools.

A Ukraine teenager who fled who her war-torn country last year and settled in San Francisco wants to return to her homeland after experiencing the violence of San Francisco's public school system.

Yana, a 13-year-old Ukrainian teenager, began eighth grade at Marina Middle School in January. But she quickly learned that life in America, especially as a vulnerable teenager, does not match the idyllic picture that many non-Americans may have about life here.

"I thought it was going to be better because it’s San Francisco," she told the San Francisco Chronicle, as translated by her aunt. "But after two days, I saw everything going on at the school."

Yana told the newspaper that she has witnessed students repeatedly interrupt classes, cause disturbances, and blatantly disrespect teachers — all without disciplinary consequences. "Nothing happened," Yana said, admitting she realized the behavior was "normal" for the school.

Unfortunately, Yana, having escaped war, became a bullying target. She allegedly had her cellphone stolen, and a group of students threatened her. The incidents, instilling fear in Yana, caused her to stop going to school. Her family requested that she be moved to a different school, but the school district denied the request. She has not returned to school since.

Last month, the San Francisco Examiner reported on the horrible student behavior occurring at the school.


The situation, which the Examiner described as "barely controlled chaos," has resulted in significant staffing turnover at the school, which only exacerbates existing problems.

I cannot say this enough:

We have a discipline crisis in our schools and it's why teachers are quitting and retiring early, and why we cannot recruit more.

It's not pay. Pay has always been low. It's that the low pay is no longer worth working in what, in too many places, has become a war zone.

So take the idea that criminals never mean to do wrong, they're just misunderstood, they don't need bond, and just let them out and it will be fine--and apply it to school discipline. Children never MEAN to do wrong, "all behavior is communication", if they misbehave, they're just trying to express some "unmet need".

Right?

I'm not trying to imply we should treat children like criminals; if anything, I have always tended toward laxer classroom management than not, because generally I hate the term "management". However, children NEED and secretly WANT boundaries. We don't need to severely punish children when they err, but holding them to some standards ought to go without saying.

And yet here we are.
