What defines a Patriot?

Love of country and support for its authority and interests.

Y'know, all these thorny little questions like "patriot" and "is" are available in this handy-dandy book we call a "dictionary". Just FYI.

So the colonials fighting against the British were not patriots?

Depends. Were they patriots to Great Britain? No, obviously not. They were traitors, and knew and accepted that that's what they were. Were they patriots to the colonies and the country that they hoped those colonies would become? I'd say so, since they pledged everything they had, including their lives and honor, to defend and uphold the authority and interests of said fledgling country.
