McCain was part of the Keating 5 that resulted in the loss of some $3 billion dollars at Lincoln Savings and Loan.

Charles Keating the owner of Lincoln S&L flew McCain and his family at his expense to vacations in the Bahamas and elsewhere (a fact McCain failed to report to Congress). Keating also sold McCain's wife an interest in a small shopping center and Keating heavily contributed to McCain's various political campaigns.

In return for Keating's "generosity" McCain went to bat for Lincoln S&L when federal banking regulators started to investigate. However when the shit hit the fan and Lincoln went under, McCain claimed that Keating was only one of his many constituents and that was the only reason he had spoken with banking regulators.

McCain is a crook.

Despite graduating in the bottom 1 percent of his Annapolis class, McCain was offered the most sought-after Navy assignment, it was to become an aircraft carrier pilot.

Why? Cuz his daddy and grand daddy was a 4 star Admiral.

It was then rumored that McCain would never make Admiral, so he sought becoming a Congressman instead.

In fact, when it came to his release as a prisoner, it is argued that the Pentagon gave the release of McCain top priority over others cuz, you guessed it, his daddy.

What really put me over the edge about McCain was how he treated the VA scandal in Arizona. Doctors reached out to McCain about the secret death lists for veterans and you would think being Mr. veteran super star he would have run to their aid. Instead, those who reached out to him were fired. Had it not been for an obscure Congressmen from Florida, the story probably would never have been leaked.

Nope, McCan't was all about himself and career and bad at whatever he did.

McCain did risk his life and paid a heavy price for it. Gore took pictures and had a contingent of body guards because of his daddy. Clinton sat out the war in Britain. Trump sat out the war. I don't see this as being a mark against McCain. Maybe limited upside, but not a blast against him.
