We just had a PARTIAL government shutdown. Only 25% of the government shut down and "only" for 35 days...and we began to realize just how MUCH we (rightly) depend on government and the people who do the work of government to function as a modern society.

We had airports beginning to shut down...food going uninspected...Law Enforcement beginning to suffer the effects (vehicles unmaintained...etc.) National Parks filling up with shit and garbage, Courts affected, Border Security affected, Food Stamps in jeopardy, tax returns not processed, agencies like the TTB crippled (preventing businesses from opening) , loans were held up, payments of various sorts were delayed, contractor work was shut down for weeks...Coast Guard going unpaid...

It's time we begin to understand that government (while not perfect) is NOT our enemy but rather not only a reflection of US but something we would be LOST without

The bootlicking here is off the scale.

We found out how overbloated and unnecessary The State is.

Canada -FREAKING CANADA- privatized their ATC over a decade ago, and delays are almost unheard of....There's no reason whatsoever that airport security has to be a federal operation.....The same can be said for a slew of other agencies.

I was just wondering, how would these private, for profit, ATC and airport security companies be paid?

Raise the prices for services rendered. To bad, so sad, your plane ticket now costs $100 to $200 more but that's what capitalism is all about.

Trump talked about this very early on and I was very optimistic he would do it..but it was just empty talk.

Airport fees paid by the airlines in turn paid by the passengers.

TSA is a new thing, prior to the behemoth that is the DHS all airport security was done private companies.

We have a far busier schedule and air traffic as complicated as it is to control...is amazingly well co-ordinated

the fact that you don't appreciate it...well fuck off

Do remember how the TSA came to be ? That’s right, the private industry allowed jets to fly into our buildings .

You haven't the vaguest idea what you're blabbering about.....They're still running ground control at LaGuardia the same way they did it in the 1950s

So shut your know-nothing yap.

Yep, it was a kneejerk reaction to a one time event that was more a failure of our intelligence agencies than airport security.

Guess you think that a single bank robbery means that all banks should be guarded by the government.

You fool enough think that price isn't already being paid right now?

Airlines are heavily subsidized by the federal government.

I haven't flown in years.

Why should I pay for others to keep prices low?

Let them pay what it should cost without those subsidies.

It's true that the airlines are subsidized....And you are paying the costs, whether you fly or not....Sucker.

Trump & the Trumpers want to destroy government.
I say let them do it.
That is why the Trumpers elected The Giant Orange Anus.
Drain the swamp, destroy government, destroy AmeriKKKa.
Let's do it.

The government seemed to work fine except for isolated whining. The unstated mission of a bureaucracy is to get bigger and receive more funding. What the partial shutdown showed us was that the bloated government agencies can and need to be trimmed buy elected officials with balls.

Looks like Trump helped identify something that can be defunded with his shutdown.

Guess some of those people who think they need to conduct business in person can pay or enter the 21st century and video conference.
