The same reason that God allowed those under the covenant of Moses to divorce their wives and in some instances have more than one spouse. "He (Jesus) saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts have suffered you to put away your wives: But from the beginning it was not so. And I say unto you, whosever shall put away his wife ....EXCEPT IT BE FOR FORNICATION.....and shall marry another, committeth adultery; and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery." -- Matthew 19:8-9

Divorce is allowed when one or the other of the spouses engages in "fornication" (sex outside of marriage).

Just how does anyone know who has a valid reason? Sounds much like gossip., "If any man among you seem to be religious; and bridleth not his tongue; but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is in vain."

Our government is prohibited from passing any laws respecting the establishment of religion therefore the government can pass no laws banning divorce
