Why I think the NYT Anonymous Op-Ed Against Trump Was Simply Invented

That may certainly be true. Unless it is eventually revealed who this is, we won't know exactly what the situation is. It wouldn't surprise me if this was Trump himself doing this in order to build his case for false news or whatever might be going through his head. As we know, Trump loves to play these games with the media. He's been doing it for over 20 years. I may be reading this wrong but I don't think Trump likes being president, which is why he's using Twitter so much to creates all these diversions such as the issue of pardoning himself and possibly even this.

What disturbs me is all of this has nothing to do with the real job of being president. Trump should be ignoring it.

Trump is Trump. There is no definition for what the 'Real job' of being President is, but what ever it is in the minds of the Professional Political Class it has NOT BEEN WORKING!

Trump had someone write it and do it. That is what I truly believe before the book Fear comes out. He is getting so much backing from his base,

Oh there is a deep state, Everyone is against him, poor Trump, and there is a coup going on, everything he says is true.
Yeah, that’s why the NYT’s claims they personally know the writer. Lol
Dude, why believe a single word that slips from the lips of the NYT?

Seriously?

However, I do think it's real because a fake letter would likely reveal much more or at least confirm more instances which already have been reported. The fact that the writer is not revealing much makes it difficult for the White House to investigate it and thus gives the person some degree of security. A fake would have no problem dropping breadcrumbs that would point to particular staff members. It will be interesting to see if our mystery insider has a followup. If not, I think that's a further indication that this is real.

You cant drop bread crumbs that you dont have, no?

To me this sounds like someone trying to sound like an insider or Trump not wanting to give anything up but still raise suspision and sympathy as well.

When you evaluate reports from overseas, enemy or friendly, you have to go through an analysis that involves hermeneutics, empathy and a little knowledge about how the author does their job and for who.

The author of this Oped is targeting liberals in an attempt to assure them that all is well, 'We have the President on a tight leash.' That is the only real info here. Who was unaware that Trump was an amoral businessman from New York who has cheated on every wife he has ever had and who has a very shallow view of people in a lot of ways, like his comparison of Melania to Ted Cruz's wife. This really isnt news to anyone who closely followed the Republican primaries in 2016.

No important information was leaked either. This was certainly no 'Pentagon Papers' by any means.

Which makes me wonder, why would anyone risk their career to publish such a nothing-burger? If you have ever met/known or worked for these types of people, a mix of sycophantic courtier, hard nosed politician and sociopathic opportunist, they are all about one thing; going up the career ladder. They do that by being a team player and making their guy win. IF a staff member even meets a member of the other side without being cleared, that dudes career is torched and he is branded untrustworthy. To publish a letter like this that literally has no point to it other than 'Trump is a moron and we are shielding the world from him' is completely 100000% contrary to the nature of these animals. It is completely unbelievable. They would not risk their hard earned status to write such a pointless piece of drek.

Why would a Republican operative write an assuring piece for the benefit of liberals with no upside for him?

Why would he give the editors of the New York Times, commie Central, a razor with which they could cut his throat by outing him as author, end his career and ruin him for the rest of his life? Any GOP political activist sees the NYT as the enemy, not their mommy to run crying to.

No Veteran GOP operative or activist wrote this piece of horse shit. It is contrary to how these people work, how they see the political universe, in which the Times is Satan on a Stick, or how they would do such a thing if they felt that they had to.

And the authors explanation doesnt add up either. IF they know Trump is such a loose cannon and off the rails, and are constantly working to keep him within the lane markers of sanity, why WOULD THEY SEND SUCH A PROVOCATIVE PIECE TO THE STAFF OF HIS MOST PROMINENT ENEMIES TO ENRAGE HIM?

This whole article sounds like something a leftwing ideologue would make up to look genuine.....or from the pen of someone who wanted to set them up.

Two things are accomplished by this Oped; 1. The NYT looks stupid, and 2. The NYT just confirmed the existence of the Deep State, all by themselves.

Guess the girl just cant help herself.
Simple because, most people are driven by emotions not logic. I read over the piece a couple of times and I agree it really doesn't reveal much at all.

However, I do think it's real because a fake letter would likely reveal much more or at least confirm more instances which already have been reported. One will note that the content of the Op Ed isn’t being contested in the OP. Very telling.

As for the Op Ed itself; Its a work of cowardice or self-importance; take your pick. The author risks nothing. IF they were found out tomorrow, they would have a 6 figure book deal in front of them by Tuesday morning; have an unending parade of media outlets willing to give them as much publicity as possible; and would likely be set for life given that most “senior officials” are in the 2nd half already. I personally think it’s Kelly Ann Conway.
If as you say, it's a work of cowardice or self-importance, then I would say it was Trump. This would not be the first time Trump has written the papers without using his name.
Trump has used several pseudonyms, including "John Barron" (or "John Baron"), "John Miller" and "David Dennison". His practice of sometimes speaking to the media under the guise of a spokesperson has been described as "an open secret" at the Trump Organization and in New York media circles.

In his younger days, Trump says he use to write anonymously in local papers.

Pseudonyms of Donald Trump - Wikipedia

Very true. We have both written and audio proof of what you say.

However, I disagree with you. The cowardice isn’t in the content but in the act itself. Trump has a job until the voters or the Senate say otherwise. Everyone in the White House except for the VP serve at the pleasure of the President. So cloaking your work in the word “anonymous” is done to ensure your survival. If this source had revealed that the President puts picante sauce on his ice cream he would be risking just as much as the content that was published. So it’s not a matter of trying to have an effect on public opinion which leads me to dub this an act of cowardice or self-importance; it’s the act itself.

I think you're giving Trump waaaay too much credit personally.
As for Anonymous...people don't do this without cashing in the chip later on. Think about Sherron Jones if you remember her; the whistle blower for Enron. She was all upset about the accounting practices and made her outrage well known internally and externally. And did zilch as the company went down the tubes. In some quarters; she was heralded as a hero. Yeah...right.

Anonymous sources are fine. As long as they stay anonymous. Don't get me wrong...BUT!!!...when they try to stay anonymous while going public...I smell a rat.

Confirming the Deep State. Well it's something, I suppose.

it wasnt invented.

dont worry, Detective Trump & I, plus Shaggy & Scooby will figure out who it is

If you think for a second that a president can change the course of the country, forget it. It won't happen. The only meaningful changes occur first with the people and then with the congress they elect. As we have seen with Trump, a new president can reverse most of the changes of the previous president.

Gosh, Jim...progressives would NEVER pay someone to write something that's totally made up! Oh wait...I forgot about Hillary! Never mind...my bad!

This “anonymous/informed sources” is Great cover for just making it up

I agree with you. Just pointing out to Penelope, who does believe them, then her comment makes even less sense.

Before it comes out? What is the date on your planet?
The official release date is Sept. 11...........dummy!

I give you credit for detailed list of reasons for your conclusion. But I disagree with your conclusion.

1) What career risk...he/she is doing the exact opposite.

Trump is a joke...common knowledge outside of Trumpbots.

When Trump gets crushed in 2020 (or before), everyone in Washington will say what an idiot he was...on both sides. But the Reps who say it will have no cred unless they attack him now...which almost none of them have the guts to do.

But then this person can come out and say 'I did...quietly'. They can distance themselves from the stigma of being aparty to a horrific administration. All by posting one, little Op Ed.

Also, on the off chance that Trump turns into a two term POTUS - like by deliberately starting a war in 2019/2020 (sitting war POTUS's NEVER lose elections) - he/she can just not tell that it was him/her who wrote it. And the NYT won't or their cred is shattered forever.

This is a win/win for the author. Either way, they cannot lose.

2) And your theory that a liberal wrote it does not make sense to me.

If that is true and the truth gets out...the NYT is finished as a respected newspaper. Done...over. Their reputation is the number one thing they have going for them in this day of online news sources killing newspaper circulation.
They lose that...bye bye NYT (eventually).

It makes little sense that the NYT would risk their entire reputation (and possibly their very survival, long term) for one, fake, Op Ed piece to get a short term boost in interest.

Besides...if it's bogus just to get attention, why do it right when Bob Woodward's book is coming out? They are taking away from each other as they are both saying the same thing. You would do it once Woodward's book has been out for a while and the hype has died down...not almost to the day his book is released. That makes zero sense to me.

3) Finally, your theory about 'why would they do this knowing it would enrage Trump' also makes little sense...no offense.
Think about it. When Trump thought everyone was loyal to him, he was a loose cannon. Why would him realizing he has people working against him make him worse? It would do the opposite...because he now knows that everything he says and does could get out to the public. So now he has to watch his step FAR more carefully.
If you know your house is being bugged and there is nothing you can do about it...are you going to say and do whatever you feel like doing? Or are you going to watch what you say and do VERY carefully...knowing the whole internet could be watching you?
Unless you are nuts, the answer is obvious...the second one.

This Op. Ed. will force Trump to act more carefully...knowing everything he does could end up in the NYT.

Nope...IMO...I see little reason or logic to doubt that this Op. Ed. is legit.

Penny. You really need to put down the pipe and get some fresh air.

Well, I actually agree with Penny on this.

That Oped has served Trump quite well before the election and has upstaged Woodwards ridiculous book before it comes out.

Qe bono?

A little advice...calling a book that has not even come out, 'ridiculous' is...well...ridiculous.

You have not even read it yet. Virtually no one has.

What's next? The next Star Wars movie sucks..even though it has not been made? The next iPhone is terrible...before they even design it?

Please.

You want to say the excerpts you have seen are, in your opinion, ridiculous....fine.

But condemning an entire book that you have not even read is silly....if you want to be taken seriously by unbiased people in the future, I suggest you refrain from giving reviews to things you have not even seen/read/used yet.

i never ever ever ever thought i would say this but....we need Jeff to investigate this doggone op-ed!

If the White House want people to believe there is no credit to the allegations in the OP-Ed, they should stop having such a hissy fit over it...

Unless they want to continue to add to this illusion that people are out to get Trump --- most of those people, he hired...

It’s an anonymous writer quoting an anonymous official about an anonymous policy decision – that’s absurd

Thanks anyway. I'll take General Mattis's word when he denied ever saying anything against President Trump.
One of the excerpts had Mattis saying Trump has the same understanding of the situation on the Korean Peninsula as "a fifth- or sixth-grader."

I don't see anything wrong with the Mattis statement. It's completely true. It's common knowledge in Washington that Trump knows very little about foreign affairs. He addressed this in his campaign. He has made a number of mistakes reflecting his lack of knowledge of North Korea, Afghanistan, and European countries. In fact, Trump has an appalling ignorance of the current world, of history, of previous American engagement, of what former Presidents thought and did. His knowledge is exactly what you would expect of a US Real Estate developer who suddenly finds himself president and in the White House.

Prior to being president Trump had visited only 7 countries excluding Mexico, Canada, and Caribbean over the last 20 years. He had never been to the far east, South America, nor Africa and had no contact with any heads of state.

Mattis like Kelly was making political statements to protect his job. It's totally understandable although there was no reason to do so since he was saying what everyone knew.

Listen to yourself lol...Mattis was protecting his job although there was no need to since everyone knew.

So was there a need to protect his job or not. lol
