To me it staggers the mind that ANYONE thought "defunding" the police was a good idea that had any chance of improving the behavior of local police forces in this country.

First off, no city seriously considered defunding the police. Some politicians responded to the mob with promises but not much happened

The support for this defunding which turned into reducing the number of officers came from two places:

Protestors in the streets inflamed over police shootings which actually were pretty rare grabbed the headlines for months. This caused city councils to consider reducing the number police because they were under political pressure. Chicago, Portland, and Seattle—cities often accused of defunding the police—all saw increases in their 2022 police budgets.

The other group who were a bit more rational wanted to reduce the number of officers and increase the number of community service personnel which could be social workers, family counselor, or mental counselors, etc. This seem to make sense since most of the calls for help did not require armed officers. In fact, having armed officers respond often aggravated the problem. The proposed solutions were to have 911 operators determine whether to to dispatch community service personnel or an officer or have community service people ride with officers. The problem was, both options would require significant increases in the budget which cities didn't have.

The bottom line was very few cities even attempted to reduce the numbers officers on the job because they had so many unfilled positions already. In most cases they just froze empty positions. Although most large police depts. recognized the need for community service personnel, they were not able to figure exactly how to use them in place of officers so in the end not much changed.

In Seattle a some police quit basically over the Covid mask issue and there were some early retirements and a lot of job position freezes. Since then the police dept. has increased the number of officers and are still looking for at least a hundred more.

But how does defunding the police lead to improving the training & resources? Nobody wants to see police misconduct, and I can see better training and resources as helping in that regard but defunding the police isn't going to help the situation.

Defunding the police never happened. It was a political issue in which some city counsel members made promises that got a lot press but never amounted to much more than freezing open positions and cutting positions where people were retiring. Within a year or so police dept. budgets in most cities were increasing.

From the mob I saw on TV I doubt that most of them vote. There is no leadership in democrat party nor any elected democrat at the the state or federal level that supported defunding the police. Rioters were not BLM they were gangster wannabes and small time criminals... It's just like gas stoves. They threw it out there and the public became upset at the thought. Then they wanted to claim they had no intention of outlawing natural gas stoves. Democrats were quick to blame republicans but in fact the violence was due to rightwing extremes, the Proud Boys and some Klan members battling some locals and Antfi, a violent leftist anti-racist group. The two days it took Trump to condemn the white supremacists gave democrats all they needed to condemn republicans for the riots and deaths.

This is a sickness that has infected the country. We blame the opposition party for the misdeeds of the most extremist supporters of the party and we do it over and over creating an ever widening gap between many millions of Americans. Nations like China and Russia fan the flames of hatred and division by planting false news stories on social media. Neither party will condemn those stories as long as they see them as beneficial. I believe eventually the nation will fail as we become more and more divided. The strength of the United States lies in the fact that we are united. As one philosopher said, United we can accomplish anything, divided we can accomplish nothing.

I have just the opposite view. The Democrat party went from Democrats to liberals, from liberals to progressives, from progressives to Socialist/Democrats, whatever the hell that is. As THEY keep drifting closer and closer to Communism there will rightfully be a divide between them and real Americans. That is why I've been advocating to divide this country into two countries instead. It's the only possible way to save at least half this nation.
