Even my friend a chief mate of an oil tanker for 15 years making around $135k/year got laid off 18 months ago. He was just lucky because he was able to get a job at carnival cruise after 6? months off making a little less but shorter trips 7 to 10 days and luxurious stops.
Compared to 8 to 10 months out in the ocean. He gave me a tour one time 03 or 05 to see how they operates, navigates, cabins, only captains can bring their wife, load and unload jet fuels, free supply of porno cd and magazines. After I left my body smells like gas for couple of hours. Probably the most boring job I ever seen.
Actually most of the seaman came from all over the world like India, Pakistan, Philippines etc. These are the people that stays down there at the bottom of the ship.
