Now then, the "universe" I inhabit is one where there was a home invasion two doors down just over a year ago, and where last spring the cops chased down a fugitive who hopped my fence and hid in my back yard. It's a "universe" where the fact that the police are RARELY able to show up quickly enough to actually stop a crime in progress is a real consideration. Not everyone who feels the need to own a firearm is trying to be the Punisher. Some of us are simply trying to not be a violent crime stat.

On top of local crime, there's also that lovely protection of rights from potential tyranny, which I also feel is a worthy consideration. You can call me a tinfoil hat wearing nutjob all you want, but I've seen the footage from the Catalan independence vote, and I don't see any reason to believe that a peaceful, first world nation can't turn tyrannical in a very short period of time. When this corporate entity that we call "government" needs to sway public opinion, keep the masses afraid or wish to implement more draconian control measures, they will stage events like Sandy Hoax, the Boston bombings, the Charleston and Pulse night club events or actual attacks with a patsy already picked out like the OKC bombing and the WTC bombings of 1993 and 2001.

The term false flag is derived from what pirate ships would do when wanting to get close to another ship. They would hoist up the flag of a country friendly to it's victim so it could get close enough to board.

Some of that is true. There are other real events you could have cited that actually did open a door to said draconian control measures.

What denying Americans their true right to bear arms is about is growing government and the dependency upon it.

If everyone open-carried and had training, there would be less of a need for:

Police
Security Guards
TSA
Judges
Jails
Lawyers
Government administrators
FBI Agents
ATF agents
"Homeland Security" agents. <<<===This one really gets me. Country did fine for 200 years without those jokers. How many "incidents" have happened since they were created? What's that? More than the previous 50 years?

It would reduce the amount of government needed by a sizable chunk. Those who would keep people cowed don't like the idea that people can, by and large, handle their own problems, and be self-sufficient without the government being involved.

Funny you should dig yourself into this hole --- I came to this site exactly five years and one week ago, when the hot topic of the moment was the Bob Costas Monday Night Football commentary about gun culture. This was the week that Jovan Belcher of the Chiefs had shot his wife and infant daughter, then drove to his practice field, thanked his coaches for thier coaching and blew his own brains out (this was a coupe of weeks after Michael Dunn killed a kid by shooting into a parked car for playing loud music, a week before Sandy Hook and two weeks before the gun nut in Webster ambushed firefighters coming to address his own arson).

That Bob Costas commentary, as I pointed out at least a thousand times, was splattered all over YouTube, every last one of them describing it as a "gun control rant". Yet the fact is, Bob Costas never mentioned anything about "gun control" at all, even indirectly. Never brought up anything about "laws" or ""potential laws" or "rights" or "Constitution". Absolutely nothing. Zero.
