As much as I think the socialism thing is an important issue to resolve, I don't really think it's the source of the problem. It's not what makes our politics so bitterly divisive. The problem is that we're trying to use to government to make decisions that it shouldn't be making. We're using it to dictate the shape of our society, and it should really be the other way around. Government should protect our freedom to create society collaboratively, and voluntarily. It shouldn't be used as a tool to force outliers to conform to the majority's vision of society.
