Walter Johnson was said to throw 100 mph, and Ruth batted .280 career against him. Not too shabby although 60 points less than his lifetime batting average.
If Babe Ruth had played in later decades, he would have had better nutrition and conditioning as well. In addition, when Ruth played, pro football and pro basketball weren't big business. The best athletes went into baseball because that's where most of the money was in team sports anyhow. Further, there were only 16 major league teams- the talent was more concentrated.

The only reason why you libs don't care for Nolan Ryan is the fact that Dubya has mentored him to this very day, teaching him everything that W knows about pitching as well as ownership. Libs don't care for Sen. Bunning either , who was a tremendous ML pitcher.

Win and loss records really can't be compared that well. Some managers keep guys in the game a lot longer, others take them out before they can get a decision a lot quicker.

"Best baseball player" is too wide a description. Takes into account too many apples and oranges. Pitchers are totally different than hitters. Even with hitters category, there are big differences. Ty Cobb was way above everybody else in Career Batting average (.366), but never hit more than 12 home runs in a season.
In contrast, other hitters were high in both batting average AND home runs (power).

Bob Uecker certainly deserves some consideration. Mr. Baseball is without a doubt the greatest .200 batting average 2nd string catcher in the history of the game. He lobbied for years to make the Hall of Fame and is now enshrined.

This bleacher report list is a joke. First it includes steroid players, which is impossible to do. Then it has Hank Aaron as # 3 and Willie Mays as #2. This is ahead of far superior players such as Ted Williams, Stan Musial, Lou Gehrig, Jimmy Foxx and Manny Ramirez, all with much higher lifetime batting averages, and better home run averages. (at bats per home run).
Also topping Mays and Aaron in these categories are :
Frank Thomas, Hank Greenberg, Mike Trout, and Mike Piazza.
It was a great achievement for Aaron and Mays to have hit so many home runs, but what must be taken into consideration simultaneously, is the enormous number of at bats they had. At 12,364 ABs, Aaron had more than anyone in baseball history, except Pete Rose. Mays was 13th all-time with 10,881.
Ted Williams (7706 ABs) had only 62% as many ABs as Aaron.
