The problem with that attitude is we already are planting for our selves and more. There will be a surplus of soy and corn this year which screws those who grow this shit. Which in turns screws those who sell farm equipemnt and down the line. This is what a trade war is both sides suffer. That being said the chinese have minipulated currency, stole crazy amounts of tech with no regard to patents and flood our markets with counterfit products. Some thing had to be done! The question is was this the right time and the right thing to be done. Some thing was going to have to be done sooner or later.

Not being able to adjust is a ridiculous situation. I seem to remember the government paying farmers not to plant in order to make Nafta work or balance out back in the 80's.

They would just disc the earth (turn the dirt over), but not plant it.

This was told to me by the foreman who was responsible for the management of the farm when I asked why the fields lay empty.

That's what I have been told is the thinking behind this current tariff/trade war. I'm not saying it is going to work; that is just the justification I've heard.

P.S. According to a forum I saw on CSPAN months ago, the farmers of America ARE pretty happy with NAFTA as it is; they are really hoping Trump doesn't ditch it or change it so much that they are negatively affected.

I've seen lots of threads talking about how farmers are rolling in government cash. My grandfather was a farmer, and I can't remember him getting government money. I asked my mother today about this, she isn't aware of government money being funneled to farmers either. How exactly are farmers rolling in government money? Oh by the way, the family farmer is just about extinct. So when people say the farmers are angry, they need to just stop. It should be the Ag businesses will be upset.

Maybe your grandfather didn't grow the right crops. I know the government used to pay farmers NOT to grow certain crops, to control the prices. Don't know if that's still the case.

Farms are still subsidized. More taxpayer money to support businesses.

The sadder thing is that China doesn't care either.

They were paying for that before NAFTA. The orriginal reason for the offering or so they said was to get farmers in better farming practices as far as wearing out the soil. They also gave them incentives to rotate crops. Pretty funny considering if you are worried about long term p[ropsrerity you will do these things any way. I do not know who thought they needed to pay peolpe to do waht is right in the long term.

Most young people these days want everything for free, and they are thinking over time on how to get it that way. The Demon-crats are all to willing to deliver everything for free if they somehow can make it to the voting booth to vote Demon-crat.

This bullcrap needs to stop, because in order to get everything for free, you got to have a huge set of workers that are gullible enough to oblige and comply.

There is no personal responsibility being taught, and that is unexceptable, but undoing years of this free thinking mindset is an up hill battle for sure, because it's easy to thow human shields at the fixers when trying to change the system back to a more responsible type system.
