I disagree. I'll use the term bullshit for a political position that is unsupportable because of some electoral or economic reality. Palin sold her bullshit because she was too stupid/badly educated to know implicitly it was bullshit, and she was too egotisical to care ... so long as she got attention.

I don't mean this offensively, and in many ways I agree with you, certainly about W, whom I regret I voted for in 2000. But your post reflects the gop's problem, and the fact we are leaderless, or lack a leader who can spell out reality for us.

A supermajority want poltiicans to do somehting to positively affect problems they have. Healthcare is just one example. The TPM has made it impossible for conservatives to advocate using tax credits to let individuals by insurance from private companies, with the individusals and private companies figuring out what the policies cover through a free market.

We've lost two elections largely on this issue when our stance has been "do nothing."

We now have people calling for an end to clean air and water laws, which undeniably have saved millions from premature death. Our policy used to allow govt to set limits on polutions, and basically let the markets allocate who polutes by "selling pollution capaicity" because the most useful polluters will have the most money.

W ushered in a view that "govt is bad" and "govt is always inefficient." Neither view is supported by history.

It's not the old guard GOP that's drove Republican approval ratings to a record low. It's the action of the Tea Party Republicans that would rather see government shutdown than accept Obamacare. With a Republican approval rating of only 24%, apparently the only people that approve of the Tea Party actions are the Tea Party.
