Or maybe it's because we're we have land and other resources to absorb large numbers of immigrants, and we as a matter of policy have taken in more immigrants than other countries.

Other countries - quite a few in fact - have larger percentages of their population that are immigrants, so in terms of scale, your metric wouldn't work.
