Guns have not prevented government overreach, political change or crime. Only registered non-fully automatic rifles and shotguns were allowed in Ukraine before Russia invaded. Ukraine only had 892,854 registered firearms as of 2018.
The main things slowing the Russian invaders is political will to fight, imported high tech drones, missile systems & intelligence. They have also rapidly imported & distributed many full automatic weapons, ammo, building Molotov cocktails & IED's that are slowing the urban door to door invasion.
Guns are useless against the mortars, rockets, cannons, tanks & bombs that are turning Ukraine cities into rubble.
Of all of the arguments the gun nuts have made over the years, their invoking the war in Ukraine is probably the most bizarre.
First, what good does a rifle do against most pave low gunships? Nothing. Next, the "ah-ha!" is so silly. Had Ukraine enacted a 2nd amendment of their own in the 1700's, the body count would be dozens (if not hundreds) of times higher than what they are going through with the Russian invasion. We have 30,000 gun deaths every year...

So why aren't our hundreds of millions of guns stopping the wide open to invasion across our Southern Border? Unlike you loudmouth gun hugging political tools, all those guns have been silent for the entire 40+ years while millions invade every year. If guns worked there would be bodies piled along the border higher than the border wall. That means THE Government's number one job is to defend against foreign attack.
It has already proven beyond question that it will not do that as the Southern Border is deliberately left wide open to invasion.
The purpose of civilian arms is to guard against a Domestic government that no longer protects it's population or turns against it.
Many could successfully argue we are there if not past that point.
The SOLE PURPOSE of Gun Control is to limit the populations ability to defend against government abuse and corruption (aka tyranny)
