Asfan Mohammed, a 31-year-old store manager in India, dreamt of a better life for his wife and two young children. Dissatisfied with his job and failing an English language test that could have led him to Australia, Asfan saw an opportunity in Russia. Lured by recruiters promising high-paying jobs, he travelled there in November 2023.
His family told NDTV that Asfan was cheated by a Dubai-based agent who runs a YouTube channel called 'Baba Vlogs' and talked about helping people get work permits for the country in his videos.

Sky News reports that some of these Indian men were illegal immigrants detained in Russia for violating visa laws. They agreed to work for the Russian military for a year, rather than facing 10 years in prison.
Seeking a job in Russia, the men travelled on tourist visas.
They were then arrested by Russian authorities for violating visa laws and told to either serve for a year in the Russian military or face 10 years in prison.
Their phones and passports were confiscated and were taken to a military camp where they were made to sign a contract in Russian.
