Drug giant official: Cohen was 'promising access' after Trump election

Oh lord, so having lobbyist laws is only a violation of the first amendment now because it is one of Trump's people that broke the law?
It's always been a violation of the first amendment. I just never knew they had such laws. Why should I have to get permission from the government to talk to my government representative? If that doesn't violate the First Amendment, I don't know what does.

How could you possibly go through the entire election and NOT know they had such laws? It's literally what Drain the Swamp is all about...

And one of Trump's 'signature laws' was writing new lobbying laws.
No, that's the leftwing conception of "drain the swamp." Getting rid of loathsome characters like Comey, Rosenstein, McCabe, Brennan, Yates and Clapper is draining the swamp.

That's not what he said when he was campaigning...

Really? How did he define "draining the swamp?"

Trump calls to ‘drain the swamp’ of Washington

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Donald Trump on Tuesday pushed a package of ethics reforms he said would "drain the swamp" of Washington, D.C., including strict limitations on lobbying and a constitutional amendment imposing term limits on Congress.

That sounds like a violation of the First Amendment.

Congress shall make no law
respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
Lobbying falls under the description "to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

No, it isn't. It was literally one of the main things Trump ran on.

"President Trump began work on one of his signature campaign promises on Saturday by signing an executive order that banned administration officials from lobbying for five years after they leave office, and prohibits them from lobbying for foreign entities. After months of second-guessing by media outlets and even Trump’s own advisors, it looks like Washington’s influence industry could be in for some real reforms."

Trump's lobbying ban was step towards 'draining the swamp'

As your article notes, lobbying isn't the only thing Trump was talking about.

It was the MAIN thing he ran on. How in the hell could you support Trump and go through the entire election cycle, and make thousands of posts on this forum and NOT know there are lobbying laws???

You didn't watch the video. How many more do you want me to post that you also won't watch?

Do you realize how absolutely ignorant you are making yourself look by saying you didn't know there were lobbying laws?

I think everyone knows why you are so misinformed and ignorant. Sorry but I'm not wasting anymore time with someone so out of touch that they didn't even know lobbying laws existed. Why you are even posting in this thread without that knowledge is beyond me.

To be more accurate, I didn't know there was a law that required you to register as one. However, it's absurd to have special laws on people who do nothing more than talk to politicians when the right to talk to them is protected by the First Amendment. Is it Constitutional to have laws that say what politicians can do with respect to lobbyists? Absolutely, but placing constraints on the lobbyists is a clear violation.

Novartis official: Michael Cohen was 'promising access' after Trump election

Play for pay..simple as that, I guess:

"President Donald Trump's personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, contacted the drug giant Novartis after the 2016 election "promising access" to the new administration, and Special Counsel Robert Mueller later requested information from the company about the offer, a senior official inside Novartis told NBC News on Wednesday.

"He [Cohen] contacted us after the new administration was in place," the official said. "He was promising access to the new administration."

The disclosure came after an attorney representing the adult-film actress who says she had an affair with Trump released a summary of bank transactions that he says shows payments from various companies to a company controlled by Cohen.

That lawyer, Michael Avenatti, said the transactions suggest that Cohen was "selling access to the President of the United States." Cohen, his attorney and the White House did not respond to a request for comment."

That's what lobbyists do, moron.

Is Cohen registered as a lobbyist? So far all the companies have come out and said Cohen didn't provide anything he supposedly promised.

No, Cohen is not registered as a lobbyist. That is one of the reasons that this is making the news.

Do yourself a favor and go read up on lobbyists. They actually came about BECAUSE of the 1st Amendment.

And, for what it's worth, ANYONE can go to their congress person's office and ask for an audience, and generally get one if they are patient.

But they have to wait for the lobbyists to go first. They're the ones with the money.

The question is - Who is paying Avenatti? Stormy has admitted it ain't her......

Got a link for that? And, if Avenatti is doing it pro bono, it's great publicity for him, as well as will get him a lot more clients. You can't buy this kind of advertising.

What kind of job to you have to have to be considered an "official" in a "drug giant"? Can a cash register clerk be considered "official" if they are gainfully employed by a "drug giant"? Nobody knows because the crazy left wing angry media doesn't care. Another anonymous unverified unidentified source that alleges nothing. Gigantic lobbyist organizations exist in Washington D.C. by vague "promises" of access to government officials. That's the way the freaking system works. If that's the best Mueller can come up with it's time to escort him off the property.

There are rules for lobbyists, and one of them is that they have to be registered with the government BEFORE they can start actively lobbying. Cohen never registered as one, and is therefore in violation of the law.

He was not a lobbyist..asshole. He was Trump's personal lawyer and he parleyed that into some big bucks.

I swear you get dumber with time.

Since when do you have to "register" to exercise your First Amendment rights?
Being a lobbyist is not a '1'st amendment right'..dumbass. Once you get paid..it becomes something else altogether.

So now Cohen is a lobbyist?
Yeah. So?

When did he register as a lobbyist? You realize you have to register as a lobbyist, right?

Because lobbyists come bearing money. When people do that, it's called bribery.

We have election laws that determine what money politicians can accept.
Right....lobbying laws are among those, genius.
No, they appear to be laws that require you to jump through hoops merely to talk to your elected representative. Anyone can donate money to a candidate at any time, so long as it's below a specified amount.
However..to pay someone..to gain special access and/or favors---is something entirely different.

Novartis CEO: ‘We Made a Mistake’ in Agreement With Trump Lawyer

"Novartis AG Chief Executive Officer Vas Narasimhan said the Swiss drugmaker “made a mistake” in signing up lawyer Michael Cohen to give the company insight on President Donald Trump’s health-care plans.

“Yesterday was not a good day for Novartis,” Narasimhan wrote to employees Thursday in a letter reviewed by Bloomberg News. A day earlier, the drug company said it had paid $1.2 million to a firm led by Cohen, who is at the center of a U.S. law enforcement probe, as well as a civil lawsuit related to payments to an exotic dancer.

“We made a mistake in entering into this engagement and, as a consequence are being criticized by a world that expects more from us,” Narasimhan said in the letter. “What defines us now is how we respond to this difficult situation.”

Novartis hired Cohen’s company in 2017. The company said it quickly determined that the lawyer’s firm would be unable to provide the services it anticipated and decided not to engage further, but was contractually bound to keep making monthly payments of $100,000.

While Novartis said it got little from Cohen, the arrangement dragged Novartis into Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into suspected Russian meddling in the U.S. presidential election."
