Forget Happy Meals - Now They're After Your Irish Coffee

Over my dead body. Seriously.

you're right.. we should ignore the fact that kids are getting hold of Four-Loko and are dying.

it's their right and all...

perhaps Irish coffee, is better left at really *being* Irish coffee instead of drinks with caffein equal to about five cups?

Ban adding caffeine to alcoholic drinks because some "kids" (are we talking about 21 year olds?) are stupid? That makes as much sense as saying we should ban pain medication because "kids" abuse them too.

First it was the after dinner cigar, then salt, then sugar, then egg yolks, then toys in Happy Meals, and now Irish Coffee.

Do you really want the Federal government to dictate what you should and should not be able to buy of legal substances and have authority to require private businesses to adhere to its dictates?

. . . .Executive summary: the FDA has informed four companies that caffeine is an “unsafe food additive” when mixed with alcohol. In this particular case, the drinks being affected are cans of carbonated, caffeinated, and alcoholic drinks… but if you’re wondering what’s the scientific difference between that and a hand-made mixture of coffee, whiskey and whipped cream, the answer’s simple: there isn’t one. This is strictly ‘political’… or more accurately, ‘pandering.’ And if you’re wondering what’s stopping the government from deciding that bars shouldn’t serve Irish or Jamaican coffee - or, God help us, Red Bull and vodka, which is apparently the big club drink now - the answer’s even simpler: nothing. Nothing at all. If young drinkers start consum[ing] hand-mixed caffeine/alcohol concoctions, the FDA will start going after the organizations that serve them. . . .

Yea, it is tough luck that stupid people do stupid things. Can we just stop expecting the government to take away the right of the majority for a couple of stupid people?

yeah, there shouldn't be an FDA... businesses with protect their employees with no OSHA... and the EPA is just mean to corporations...

Let's not get hysterical about it, mo chara. Let's just keep it in proportion. Just because some people are stupid, doesn't mean that the federal government should step in. Warn people of the dangers and let them make their own decisions.

If underage kids are drinking "Four Loko", then the authorities should be going after the people selling it to them, not the company making it.

Why should adults that enjoy it have to suffer for liquor store owners and their employees who don't know how to or care enough to card their customers?

No one "enjoys" Four Loko.

Ah, then the brewery will stop making it, and this "issue" will just go quietly into the night.

I don't think you understood what I was saying..

No one "enjoys" it. They buy it because it's 2.50 and has as much alcohol as 5 cans of Budwiser.

It tastes worse than you can possibly imagine.

I dunno... if it tastes as good as Red Bull... then I gotta ask... WTF?

That crap is NASTY.

Except that no one has "banned adding caffeine to alcoholic drinks". One specific drink has been banned, nothing more.

no one is "hysterical", love. but the fauxrage over taking something off the market because people are dying is pretty bizarre to me. but it's consistent with the whining the same people do over any restriction on their "liberty"...

*bingo*

Whatever hapenned to just getting drunk?

That's what we used to do. Oh wait, I still do it.

Exactly. Anyhoo... I'd like to know how big an issue this really is? Didn't this shit like, just come on the market?

Came on the market about a year ago.

One can of Four Loko has as much alcohol as nearly 5 12 oz cans of regular beer, and as much caffeine as 5 cups of coffee. It's already been blamed for a number of heart failures in otherwise perfectly healthy teenagers.

If the issue is that "kids" (that would mean adults over 21) don't understand that one drink is the same as five, that can be properly handled without banning the entire practice of adding caffeine to an alcoholic drink, no need to criminalize run & cokes, irish coffees, red bull & vodkas, and chocolate martinis.

And how does that stop them when they decide to do more? What stops or controls them? Who are they accountable to?

No one has banned adding caffeine to an alcoholic drink.

The thread title is a lie.

They didn't just take something off the market, they banned adding any caffeine to any alcoholic drink. No more "Crown & Diet."

Kids will die if they down a whole bottle of Aspirin. Should the FDA ban that too?

I have the funny feeling that at the end of the day.. this will be mucho ado about nada.

Some Spanish lingo for mi Hombres.!

NO, they did NOT.
