You are wrong. The US was blamed for the 1953 coup against the elected government of Mohammad Mosaddegh. The coup was orchestrated by the CIA among other western powers. The youth were against the USA at the time of the Iranian Revolution and the Shah was highly unpopular. The Iranians still have not forgotten the US involvement in the coup.Suppressing the crazy students in 1979 would have been ugly and jimmy carter had no stomach for it
But it was doable with US support from behind the scenes
iran was on a course to becoming a modern and progressive in the good sense of the word western style society
It might even have been a British-style democracy by now
But the fanatic muslim 24 Century throwbacks wanted something else
