In Afghanistan, U.S. troop losses per year are now only tiny fraction of what they once were at the start of the decade.

By the way, the United States has an all volunteer army. The vast majority of its troops come from middle class families. All officers in the United States military have a 4 year college degree. Many enlisted personal also have college degrees. The United States military has one of the best educated fighting forces in the world.

The Russians would not waste nuclear weapons on the theory of causing the eruption of a volcano. Russian nuclear weapons would be directed at U.S. military sites and bases of which there are hundreds throughtout the country. The destruction caused by that would be more than enough to kill 90% of the population within a year. But that has been a fact of life since the late 1960s.
