WOW. In the 8th grade we needed to pass a civics test before going to high school. We even needed to memorize and then write the preamble to the Constitution as part of the test.

In 7th grade, I had to memorize the Bill of Rights, verbatim, and the Preamble to the Constitution.

Clearly you had the same curriculum that the current iteration of the GOP fears.

The governor did exactly the right thing. Teaching “gun safety” in school is as stupid an idea as I have heard. Gun safety should be a mandatory class for anyone that wants to buy a gun.

A ”civics exam” exam before you get your degree? How about they just requiring civics in high schools.

Senior year in my high school required a six month course, 2/3 on Civics and 1/3 on Economics.

Had a friend who taught in the junior college system in his state, so his classes were mostly the first two survey classes. The governor and the legislature put in this far right wing nonsense of a curriculum for American history that completely distorted the real narrative.

So the instructors overwhelmingly taught what they wanted and submitted false syllabi to the state.
