First, the greenhouse effect of certain gases in Earth's atmosphere (CO2, NO2, CH4, polychlorofluorocarbons and, of course, water vapor) does not work in quite the same manner as a glass greenhouse. They just have similar results. The majority of light from the sun entering the Earth's atmosphere is visible light. There is actually very little infrared there because the sun's very high temperature. That light passes almost unhindered through the air but it is reflected and absorbed by clouds. The visible light strikes the surface of the planet on land and water. Some of that is reflected away, some is absorbed. The absorbed light warms whatever material absorbed it, raising its temperature. Now all matter radiates EM radiation with the spectrum of that radiation determined by its temperature. Unlike the sun's, the temperature of the Earth causes it to radiate a great deal of infrared (IR) radiation. If our atmosphere was transparent to IR, all that energy would just shoot off to space. But those greenhouses gases very quickly absorb part of that IR radiation. Before it's gone 30 feet up, virtually every IR photon has been absorbed. The CO2 reradiates that energy at the same frequencies it was absorbed at and it sends it in every direction. So some of that goes down and gets absorbed by the surface, further warming the land and water. Some goes up towards space but before it has covered another 30 feet, it will have gotten absorbed again. So for every quanta of IR energy, escaping the planet is a long series of stops at greenhouse gas (GHG) molecules and Earth's surface along the way. This whole process elevates the temperature of the oceans and the lands and the atmosphere. It works just like a blanket by slowing the escape of energy.
