Here's a rather chilling statistic for those of you that believe teachers should be reporting to a kids parents that he or she is gay...

40% of homeless teenagers are gay or lesbian. Gays make up, what, 4-10% of the population depending on who you ask and yet 40% of homeless teens are gay. 26% of teens that come out to their parents are asked to leave the home.

Have you ever thought about this. You keep making the assumption that a kid will be hiding their sexuality from their parents, yet putting it on full display for the entire student body. Why do you think every gay teen would do that? I never once, in this entire thread, assumed that a parent is abusive. But you are under the assumption a parent won't know something that most of the school would? Why?

If your child can't talk to you about something like this, something's wrong. If your child has to hide this from you, but has no problem letting the entire student body know, then you are an abject failure as a parent.

Why is it necessary for a counselor or teacher to report a child they suspect to be gay or was confided in that they were gay? To what end would you require this disclosure to the parents? What purpose would it serve? If a child does not want to tell his/her parents, why would you? They aren't doing anything.

Teachers do not have the training or the education to deal with this type of situation. Reporting a child can cause far more harm than good, especially if the parents are homophobes or the child is straight and the teacher is simply mistaken.

You want the government (through the teachers) to butt their noses into family's personal lives, where the governement has no damned business.

Let the teachers teach and educate and let the parents parent. Quit authorizing the government to butt even more into people's lives and quit trying to make teachers responsible for things they don't have the training or the knowledge to deal with.

And the schools have no right to be helping the kids hide information of any kind from their parents. If there's an abuse issue, that's another matter..report it (which they often don't). I took an extension course to have something productive to do in the evening while on base at Camp Lejeune, NC. I took a course in Cultural Archaeology and Physical Anthropology. As I recall, they didn't offer many courses that weren't entry level.
