Uwe and Hannelore Romeike came to the United States in 2008 seeking political asylum. They fled their German homeland in the face of religious persecution for homeschooling their children.

They wanted to live in a country where they could raise their children in accordance with their Christian beliefs.

The Romeikes were initially given asylum, but the Obama administration objected – claiming that German laws that outlaw homeschooling do not constitute persecution.

“The goal in Germany is for an open, pluralistic society,” the Justice Department wrote in a legal brief last year. “Teaching tolerance to children of all backgrounds helps to develop the ability to interact as a fully functioning citizen in Germany.”

On Monday, the Supreme Court declined to hear the Romeike’s appeal – paving the way for the Christian family of eight to be deported.

that health care is a right and should be managed by govt,
and depriving people of liberty (to choose to pay for health
care without federal mandates) is not an imposition either.

Seriously RW do you even realize how parallel you run
to prolifers who don't think abortion is a viable choice,
so regulating the choice is no loss, and not imposing on freedom
any more than banning murder which is a crime, not a legal choice.

Are you telling me that restricting the choice of abortion
infringes on human rights, but not the choice of education?
(I already brought up the issue of Atheists who successfully sue to get crosses removed,
but Constitutionalists can't get mandates removed that not only offend and exclude their
beliefs, but impose conflicting beliefs against theirs and penalize them for not complying.)

Frankly I think any family should be able to move anywhere.
You would be left with a homogenous population that agrees
with the policies so operations would run smoothly by ppl who want it to work not fail.

As for Germans, there is a historic Germantown around the Houston
area. Maybe a local church and the homeschool networks could organize
a sponsorship so the family can stay and participate in a welcome environment
for their beliefs in Christian education in a home setting. Why not, even if it
is a temporary foreign exchange, why not support solutions instead?

If they have to go back to Germany, maybe some of the supporters could
help them set up something there. Where even if the kids are required to go through the required school system,
they can have additional education on the side, on the weekends or after school to have the best of both worlds.

this sounds like the crap with the insurance mandates,
where people naturally desire liberty to do things on their own,
and only want to submit to govt where they feel represented
and NOT be treated or rejected as some kind of criminal.

I don't see any need to force this on people; if the system
really works well, it should be chosen freely and not have such conflicts.

His aunt was (and still is) on welfare when she was exposed in 2008 and should have gone to the top of the deportation list. Likewise with the uncle who is a convicted DUI and was ordered to leave 20 years and refused!! But obozo lets them stay.

WASHINGTON – A German home-schooling family facing deportation following the Supreme Court’s refusal to hear their appeal is being allowed to stay in the U.S.

The Department of Homeland Security has granted the family “indefinite deferred status,” their attorney confirmed to Fox News.

That means the Romeike family, who claim the German government is persecuting them because they want to raise their children in accordance with their Christian beliefs, can stay in the United States without the threat of being forced return to their home country, the family’s legal team told Fox News.
