How is Obama's share of the African American vote an indication of racism when Gore and Kerry earned essentially the same percent of the African American vote when they ran in 2000 and 2004?

Do you have a link which also gives voter turnout, because that is what really makes the point. Of course Blacks will vote for the party of entitlements, but I'd be willing to bet a lot more stayed home in 2000, and 2004 than did 2008, and 2012.

Good question. 90% of American blacks consider themselves Democrats. Big surprise so many would vote for Obama. In every election the Democratic candidate gets the vast majority of the black vote: in 1936, FDR got 71% of the black vote. In 1964 Johnson got 94% of the black vote. Other stats have been presented in previous posts. It's no surprise at all that a Democratic candidate would get such a large portion of the black vote.

Could it possibly be because democrats always promise to GIVE them free stuff? They never actually do it, but they always promise it.

The people in my family voted for Obama, because he represented our interests and the color of his skin wasn't a consideration.

I think it's perfectly understandable that identity issues will influence vote when barriers like race, ethnicity or gender are initially broken, but the day will come when identity isn't a factor in how people vote. The world is going to be a better place when people are like me and just don't give a damn about race. MLK had a dream and eventually that dream will come true.

Just after I was born, our family moved to South Carolina, when my dad was working to build the Savannah River National Laboratory. Augusta, Georgia was a large city near that area and my mother told me many stories about how she embarrassed herself there. Mom didn't grow up around those Jim Crow laws and she would do things like go into a cafe and set at the wrong area for a White person to eat or drink from the wrong fountain, because she was taking care of two young kids and not looking for a sign saying it was for Black people. She told me about going in a diner and sitting there for the longest time until someone finally came up to her and told her White people had to sit over there. I think she said she sat there for about a half an hour. I guess White people were told what they had to do, too.

I learned early in life, it shouldn't be my mother who should be embarrassed, but the idiots who made those laws.
