Donald Trump’s long-standing promise to use import tariffs to try to revive the US steel and aluminum industry was opposed by US economists, labor experts, and even the industries themselves—but the White House did it anyway. As a result, over 146,000 Americans will lose their jobs, economists estimate.

Tariffs might protect some jobs in the US steel industry, but far fewer than the number of jobs that will be lost. That’s because steel manufacturers in the US employ far fewer people than industries that make things out of imported steel, like automakers. Just over 400,000 people in the US work in metal-producing jobs, economist Jed Kolko wrote in March. Four and a half million work in jobs that depend on metal.

I've heard similar, and believe that would be total numbers including tariffs on China, but I can only attest to the numbers offered in the article related to steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada and Mexico.

Interestingly enough, the tariffs against our allies Canada, Mexico, and the EU go into effect tonight at midnight.

However......................China, who isn't our ally gets to wait until next month or mid July.

Why is that?

Trump Moves Ahead With Trade Sanctions Against China

In what appears to be an effort to ratchet up pressure on China to make greater concessions in ongoing trade negotiations, the Trump administration announced today it was moving forward with tariffs and other trade restrictions associated with U.S. claims of intellectual property theft by Chinese enterprises. But the actions will not be implemented until mid-June or early July. The New York Times describes this statement as a gesture designed to ensure that Beijing does not misunderstand recent conciliatory remarks from Washington as indicating any change of heart on the underlying issues:

Over 146,000 Americans will lose their jobs to Trump's trade tariffs
The point being, I suppose, that the US steel industry will suddenly begin employing a $hitload more people than it does now?

Could this be an 'opening gambit' in a much broader and longer-term renegotiation of trade agreements with Canada and Mexico?

President Trump's steel and aluminum tariffs: Winners and losers
One estimate, from consulting firm Trade Partnership, forecast about 179,000 U.S. jobs lost versus 33,000 created as a result of the metal tariffs.
So ultimately 146,000 jobs lost.

Yes, I see it.

I cannot help but point out, however, that these are all speculative, and only short-term knee-jerk reactions rather than long-term outcomes.

Just ignore everything lefties ever say. Well, better yet. Just whatever they claim, automatically presume the exact opposite. You will literally never be wrong.
