Yep, tariffs do what is intended only because American businesses pass along to consumers the tariff (tax) the business is charged for importing foreign goods. The person I was responding to didn't seem to understand that is what businesses do, pass along their costs to their customers.

First, labor costs depend on the business and the percentage of its expenses that come from labor and accompanying costs. Tax increases would affect different companies and industries differently.

Second, a business will first try to absorb the costs. They may be able to do it out of cash flow. They may be able to cut costs. They may be able to make any number of internal changes. They may have to delay expansion and/or capital improvements. Larger companies may drop their dividends a bit. I could go on, but why bother.

Yes, increased taxes will affect most businesses negatively, although in the big picture the effects may be mitigated. But to make sweeping assumptions and projections is ridiculous and ignorant.
