BBC News - Supreme Court upholds Michigan affirmative action ban

The US Supreme Court has upheld a voter-approved ban on racial preferences in university admissions in the US state of Michigan.

In a 6-2 ruling, the court said voters there had the right to prohibit public universities from taking race into account in admissions decisions.

It was the latest blow to the 1960s civil rights movement-era system of race-based preferences in admissions.

It makes no difference which race you favour, collage admissions MUST be based on ability and suitability; not anything to do with race.

The very fact some people want race to be a factor, is stupidity.
The civil rights lot are bloody idiots; trying to replace old racism with new racism.
Pathetic.

Except that the qualifying standards weren't always used. A college has space for 4 new students, but they have applications from 12 equally qualified kids. 4 are white, 3 are black, 4 are hispanic, and 1 is American Indian. Invariably a racist college will pick the 4 white kids instead of drawing names out of a hat.

Well in the future I reckon they will have to draw names. Since racial discrimination is still illegal.

And a big thanks to fellow Michiagn voters who got the ball rolling that led to this very good SCOTUS decision!

Things are finally looking up a bit in our state. We're a right to work environment now and racism is no longer part of the acceptance policy at UM or elsewhere.

Now, if we could just do something about those darn Spartans!

This Court ruling makes this illegal. Which it should be anyway.

Or pick any but the white students.

you are badly misinformed. the acceptance rate for minorities that are 'equally qualified' is significantly higher than the white rate, even in colleges that are supposedly race-blind in admissions.

No one’s arguing otherwise, which would indicate your ignorance of the issue.

It’s perfectly appropriate, legal, and Constitutional for colleges and universities to use race or ethnicity among several other factors when considering potential candidates if they so desire, and the recent Supreme Court ruling had nothing to do with the constitutionality of such policies.

The Supreme Court only addressed the issue as to whether a given jurisdiction’s prohibition of race as a criterion used to select candidates violated the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment, which it clearly does not, as minorities are in no way disadvantaged by such a measure.

Which would be just as bad as a racist college that uses Affirmative Action, and picks the 3 black kids.

Not if the African-American candidates meet or exceed other qualifying criteria. Race alone is never used as a factor when determining eligibility, something you and other racists fail to understand, which is a consequence of your ignorance concerning such policies.

Would you mind telling us what the hell you're talking about ? It sounds like you're saying that the SCOTUS did not set a precedent that banning affirmative action is OK.
If that's what you're saying, you're 100% wrong, because that's exactly what they did, and standby while the bans come marching in.

I lost count with how many things you got wrong in just 2 sentences.

1. Race alone is used ALL THE TIME in AA, all over America. Whose programming have you been sucking up ?

2. Someone isn't a racist because they oppose racism (as in race-based AA)

3. If you're going to talk about people of the black race, you need to stop using the erroneus term "African-American". The correct term is "Black". The term "Negro" is also correct (although outdated), and at least refers to the correct group, and them only. Problem with the incorrect term "African-American" is, it doesn't do what it must do to correctly isolate to the group it means to describe. Rather than just describe Black persons, it could encompass people of any race.
Example: I have known 4 guys in my life who immigrated to the US from Africa. They are from Botswana, Tanzania, South Africa, and Rhodesia (now called Zimbabwe). All are "African-Americans". All 4 are White.

Perhaps we'll hear no more of "the tyranny of the majority" from the right ...for a while.
