Dems have been the left wing party since long before either of us were even born.

Southern white democrats were about as conservative as you could get until the second half of the 20th century when they started a mass exit of the party leaving mostly blacks. The result is an ultra right republican party and ultra left democratic party which accounts for the increasing number of independents.
