So...raising the minimum wage will put busineses out of business..who have thunk it.......

What part of cutting positions and hours are you guys not getting.........they will get 15 dollars....but they won't have a job and/or they will get so few hours they will be the same or less.....and the cost of what they need to buy will go up......

Really in three years the comic book store can't increase sales $120 a day with many customers having increased income?

Like I said...imagine how many comics they could buy if they had a 1,000 dollar an hour minimum wage...this busines owner would be rich......

Again we are talking $15.

And these are just two businesses that say they are going to close...imagine all the others.....but you lefties love wal mart...you can buy your comic books there......

I've shown why they won't have to close.

You haven't shown squat.

Minimum wage has been raised for decades

Conservatives always sell gloom and doom stories of lost jobs that never seem to materialize

Naturally. They always drastically hike it up over $5 an hour when they raise it.

They have to. Once it is raised, it will be years before it is raised again. We need to automatically tie minimum wage to rises in the cost of living

It looks like they have two stores and need $80,000 revenue to cover. Also this doesn't go into effect till 2018. So by 2018 they need to incease sales by like $120 for each store a day. Given the comic book crowd many customers will be getting raises. I see them having no problems increasing revenue by $120 a day.

Which shows you have zero understanding of anything involving economics whatsoever.

The do tell what is wrong with the numbers.

Well by 2018 inflation will increase the amount needed over $80,000, and in a niche market like comic books and collectibles, how do you fathom an increase in $120 a day actually happening?

And lots of comic book people are actually high income (especially in San Francisco), so your premise of an increased income from low end people buying more comic books is wrong.

Here is a hint, people working minimum wage type jobs, even with the $15 an hour, usually aren't the type with comic book designated disposable income.

Any others inflation would happen regardless of the min wage increase. We have to look at just the $80,000. Are you still living in a world where comics are 10 cents? They are rather expensive now. It's probably not that strange for one sale to be over $120. And yes many min wage types spend money on comics.

I would amend your post to read some percentage of workers will lose a job. Prices will go up some percentage. Purchasing power and thereby sales will go up by some percentage. Store revenue will go up by some percentage. More jobs will thereby open by some percentage.

Things will have a tendency to balance by some unknown degree. You don't have to be so dogmatic on your pessimistic prediction because you simply can't predict what the "some percentages" might be.

All suppositions, no facts. and he isn't saying he has to sell $120, his sales have to increase by $120 a day.

Do you really think this guy just want's to give up his business?

Its a simple fact that the job the people are doing for him cannot justify a $15 an hour wage, and thus he has to call it quits.

Yeah....only 15 dollars an hour....you guys have no clue....

No I do. How much of an increase is it? Are the comic book store workers making $11 now? Says one person per store open 10 hours a day. That's like $40 a day in three years. Meanwhile customers will also get raises and have more to spend.

No, customers won't...because they will have their positions cut and their hours cut as other businesses have to make up the difference......keep sprinkling that pixie dust...it will all work out......

No because other businesses will also have increased sales obviously.

again...not getting it.....

So you don't understand why increased income would increase their spending?
Because the cost of everything rises the purchasing power of a minimum wage increase doesn't rise. The actual power of the increase is reduced by a commensurate rise in the cost of everything.

This comic book seller has more than one store. He cannot raise prices because the price is set by the publisher. What he should do is expand what merchandise he sells and include more products. Close the lowest earning stores and end employee support services. If he has a janitorial service stop that and require employees to do the cleaning themselves. Then he could squeak by.

You suddenly jack it up $5 an hour, yes, you're going to see businesses close. That's Econ 101 and not hard to understand.

3 years is suddenly? This comic book store should be fine and I doubt many other businesses will have any problems. Sales for all of them however will increase.

The dynamic....small businesses...the "Mom and Pop" stores the left claim to love....are going out of business...but the big chains..the ones who can take the hit.....will open and expand.......and the left will then bitch about the loss of the mom and pop stores....there is no making the left happy.....they are genetically unable to understand reality, and therefore will never find happiness....

Hibbs is not the first person to encounter this problem. On February 1, San Francisco’s renowned science-fiction bookstore Borderlands Books published the following on its website:

Although all of us at Borderlands support the concept of a living wage in princip[le] and we believe that it’s possible that the new law will be good for San Francisco — Borderlands Books as it exists is not a financially viable business if subject to that minimum wage. Consequently we will be closing our doors no later than March 31st.

” “Why,” he asks, “can’t two consenting people make arrangements for less than x dollars per hour?”

And the problem goes still deeper. While forcing hundreds of Bay Area small businesses to close, cut staff, or overhaul their practices, San Francisco lawmakers have given multimillion-dollar tax breaks to lure or keep technology giants such as Twitter and Zoosk. “There’s lots of room for the rich and the powerful,” Hibbs observes, “but, really, they’re not doing anything to help small business.”

So the chain stores are going to put Mom and Pop stores out of business.......Somebody should warn all those Mom and Pop stores what might happen when Walmart comes to town.......Oh wait.

Drama queen maybe? Was already looking for reason to close? Doesn't understand increased income will lead to increased sales?

Why would their sales increase?

Because of increased income.

Increased income? So you believe taking money from the employer (by gov't fiat)and giving to the employees will yield increased spending? How about the decreased spending by the employer? There is no new wealth being created. The only way this MW stupidity can translate into "increased income" is if the employer can raise prices to maintain the profit margin and those higher prices mean less spending power putting us right back where we are now. I have no prob with individual state or local MW but the federal gov't has no biz meddling in the market for labor. None. Zippo. Zilch. Nada. It a feel-good political movement intended to satisfy unions (whose contracts are often MW+ based) and people who are at the bottom in part because they don't understand economics.

The increase in min wage will increase the income of customers. This increase will increase sales. Sales increase will cover increased wages for employer. Quite simple really.
