...McConnell tells House Dems to put up or crawl back under their rocks:

-- MCCONNELL: “If the existing case is strong, there’s no need for the judge and the jury to reopen the investigation. If the existing case is weak, House Democrats should not have impeached in the first place. I think I’m beginning to understand why the speaker wanted to change the subject to tax policy. But unfortunately, no matter how irresponsibly this has been handled across the Capitol, impeachment is not a political game, and the United States Senate will not treat it like one.

“The House majority, fueled by political animus, may have started this with frivolity, but it will fall to the Senate … to end it with seriousness and sobriety. It will fall to us to do what the founders intended: to take the long view, move beyond partisan passions, and do what the long-term good of our institution and our nation demands.”

So we should just ignore anything that has come out since then? The house decided it had heard sufficient evidence to impeach but no one has said that it's case closed, story over. This is especially true since the White House is blatantly concealing evidence and obstructing justice.

Tone seems to have changed after finding he did not have the votes to block witness.

IOW, the House shouldn't have been in such a hurry to impeach. They could have gone to court and they .would have gotten their witnesses. But no, we gotta impeach 'raht now.'

He missed the Kill Shot here.. Apparently the House did such an amateur job on the investigation that they ignored all the "key first hand witnesses"... That's my take on the complaint...

The concept of making the ACTUAL impeachment articles so general, vague and fluffy was to allow them to FISH for better catches during the trial... Kinda a "catch and release" tournament of some kind.. :coffee:

Relax. Trump is impeached, but won't be removed. All the Republicans are dying to get on the record in the roll call vote.

What makes you think McConnell lacks the votes to choose the witnesses he deems necessary and appropriate? Consider Adam Schiff whose contacts with and direction of the "whistleblower" will be front and center. And for that matter the "whistleblower" himself and the 2nd "whistleblower" that was thought to be a "bombshell" and then quietly disappeared. And then there is the matter of the informer who leaked the info to them. Any who refuse their subpoena could delay proceedings for months, tying all for Dem Senators who would be POTUS to their senate seats. Somehow Dems never think these things through before opening their always stupid mouths.

You are aware that both executive privilege and 5th Amendment rights will be in effect, right?

Nothing has come out since then.

Article #2 - obstruction of congress - could be dismissed on the first day. The executive branch has the constitutional authority to reject demands of the legislative branch which then has the courts to seek remedy ... not impeachment. And Trump acted well within his rights and duties to request that the beneficiary of US foreign aid investigate potential corruption on the part of a former gov't official.

That is why no criminality was included in the articles of impeachment-lite. As much as many desperate not-too-brights need to believe it, "Trump is a poopy-head" is not a high crime or impeachable offense.

After it became clear that the White House will never, ever be forthcoming with witnesses and documents there was no sense waiting on them. Anything else is just letting them run out the clock.

Not true.. Cases were running thru the courts as they were supposed to do... Bolton and others requested a Judicial branch ruling.. Pelosi was TOO rushed to follow thru... Tough titties...

Impeachment is such a somber thing, but she apparently has a busy schedule.. Like disrupting an election cycle..

Yet Pelosi has refused to transmit the articles precisely to make the Senate force those witnesses and docs you claim "will never be forthcoming" to be forthcoming. Either Pelosi is crazy or you are FOS ... or both.

By my headcount and the news reports he doesn't have a safe 51 votes to block and has now changed his rhetoric, saying both side will want to call witnesses. 5th amendment won't change the vote at end of his public televised trial, but may make any witnesses new witnesses the Democrats get to call look like guilty cowards, whether they are guilty of anything or not. It is going to be quite a show. Would not be surprised if trial is still going during State of The Union, just like when Bill Clinton was impeached (he was actually guilty, just like Trump, only for getting blowjobs and refusing to tell the truth about it) making the State of The Union Speech more interesting to watch. Aren't you enjoying this historic lesson in American Democracy and Constitutional over-site in action?

There is no way there will ever be a voluntary witness from the White House under any circumstances. People do not obstruct unless they are concealing things far more serious.

Horseshit. The Trump admin has responded to ludicrous Dem House demands the way any adult should deal with petulant children ... just say no. The House has the same remedy available to solve disputes with the WH that the Senate does ... the courts. If the House Dems had a real case they would have pursued their witch-hunt in the courts rather than dump their mess onto the Senate - after Pelosi's 4 week delay - and demand McConnell fix it. That not just unhinged, it's STUPID (pronounced: "Democrat").

Wait, didn't the ruling that would allow Bolton and others to testify despite Trump saying he wouldn't allow them to, get handed down after the impeachment vote? Or at least when they were finished with testimony? It's pretty difficult to have firsthand testimony when Trump exerts executive privilege and won't allow them to. Not to mention all the other evidence he would not send over to Congress. If nothing wrong took place, then what is Trump hiding and why would he not let those people testify? Hell, Mulvany told the world the truth when he clearly said it WAS a quid pro quo and that people need to "just get over it."

In fact, they pulled the one subpoena when it was challenged by the WH rather than fight in court because they knew it would take weeks or even months to adjudicate and in all likelihood they would not have gotten their man.

But yeah … the unhinged House Dems dumped their impeachment-lite mess on the Senate without even charging the POTUS with a crime.
