The First Republican Debate/ results

Who won the 1st clown debate?

Mrs. Clinton of course. Although the Ohio Gov. was way too reasonable to be on stage with most of the clowns.
I would hesitate to call Dr. Ben Carson a clown.
As a surgeon......no
As a politician.....yes
I dunno... the guy talked a good game during last night's sortie.
Carson is out of his league.
He has no knowledge of how Washington works, how to deal with Congress, the economy, foreign policy or national issues

He has never held political office at any level

You need one third of Congress to sustain your veto. Trump cannot count on Republicans in Congress. That is what happens when you burn your bridges

Oh how I wish they'd had the Internet in 1979!

Then I could link you to the endless stories in WSJ, WP and NYT by people like George Will, who made the exact same claims of one, Ronald W. Reagan.

Let me 'splain to your stupid little ass how politics work... The man who is sitting in that chair in the Oval Office is the Boss. You may grumble and complain, at the end of the day you're going to do what the boss tells you to do. Oh I realize Trump can't fire them if they don't... and that is even more the reason they will do as he tells them. Every Senator and Representative wants to be relevant. If Trump manages to win the GOP nomination, you're going to see a remarkable change in attitudes. There will be no shortage of Republicans eagerly wanting to tap into Trump's popularity among the people and they will have a "come to Jesus" moment when they realize they have to support him.

They may not like it at first, Trump might have to make a few examples, but pretty much all these people on the Republican side who are currently bashing Trump will have had a change of heart.... funny how popular mandates can cause that to happen.

Nice too see the progressive turds of USMB have to post over and over about how the Republican Party has no serious candidates. It just goes to show how scared they are. Their preordained Queen is already faltering, and their party has no one else but a couple of old boring white men to represent them. Good luck getting the welfare crowd out to vote for that.

Reagan had to deal with Tip O'Neil He didn't get anything done because he was "The Boss"
Unlike Trump, Reagan was not an asshole and knew how to work with the other side

Yes, Reagan had to deal with the Democrat leader in the Senate. Trump will have to deal with Democrats too. Jeb Bush would have to deal with Democrats. Ted Cruz would have to deal with Democrats. Are you getting my point? I don't think we can pick a Republican who won't have to deal with Democrats.

The people I am talking about are the REPUBLICANS you claim he can't count on... Which Republicans was Reagan unable to count on? Maverick McCain, maybe? ...Yet all through the GOP primaries, republican talking heads kept telling us that Reagan would be this divisive force that no one would ever work with, even from his own party.... remarkably, almost verbatim what you are claiming about Trump.

Reagan had tact. Trump has the tongue from Hell.

Trump is forcing the field to actually face issues. I'll give him credit for that.

But he would make a terrible president. He started out rich and has built an empire by taking risks. Those risks resulted in how many bankruptcies?

And an effective president MUST work with Congress. Trump is not known for his ability to compromise or work with a group of equal power.

Work with congress? Like obama?

Trump will be unable to work with either party in Congress

Nonsense. He's bought plenty of both...he knows how they work.

"I PAID for this mike!"
~Ronald Reagan to establishment GOP moderators trying to shut him up!

Ronald Reagan ALSO had a tongue from hell when he needed it. AND.... Reagan didn't have to deal with this ever-reverberating noise machine which has become our influential 24/7 news cycle of political sensationalism and knee-jerk reactionism.

I agree about him forcing the issues. I sometimes wonder if that's the only reason he's running, not to win but to get the issues taken care of.

The only issue Trump cares about is his ego

Trump never cared about immigration or the plight of our veterans until a few weeks ago. Now, he acts like he invented it

A year ago the only political issue Trump cared about was Obamas birth certificate

Rubbish. I hated the "Apprentice" and consider "Ms Whirl" to be a meat rack...albeit a very pretty one...but this is where people get it WRONG...it is the POLICIES that matter, and frankly I don't give a damn about who brings them along. Trump has been touting policies for many years. Most I like; some are potty. The potty ones are low on the scale but the good'uns...they're Trumps!!

We are not talking Jeb Bush or Ted Cruz

Trump would have to be able to work out deals with Congressmen. That is what politics is all about
Telling a congressman....I'm rich and you're not will not get him very far

Reagan had Irish charm

Trump does not know the meaning of the word

He's a business man first so the borders,Iran, and other issues may effect his capital in some way.

Dunno about that, Marianne. I agree that as a businessman wealth creation/gathering has been a massive focus. And rightly so;
There is a tide in the affairs of men, Which taken at the flood, leads on to fortune. Omitted, all the voyage of their life is bound in shallows and in miseries. On such a full sea are we now afloat. And we must take the current when it serves, or lose our ventures.

The tide is his way at the moment, and he's going for it. I wish him well, but if he trusts the eventual winner to put in place the policies he sees are best for America...US that is...then he will be successful in his own mind.

Telling a congressman....I'm rich and you're not will not get him very far
Insider knowledge of how things work in office would get him far................He knows who buys and sells politicians for their own personal gain.....................Knowledge is power and many in Congress and the Senate are whores................Trump has bought these whores before................so he may have ammo enough against them to make him a threat.................

Beyond that...................I don't think he performed well last night...............but he was attacked from the get go............I still consider him a possible Ross Perot................and that dog doesn't hunt.

Frankly, they just need to leave Donald alone - he will implode on the campaign trail. People want plans, not rhetoric.

I was most impressed with Rubio and Fiorina. I wasn't a Rubio fan, but he got my attention. As for Carly, she's a bulldog - and a damn smart one, at that.

I recall the vitriol against Obama from Hillary supporters in 2007/8. Come election day they were lock-jawed onto Obama's ankles!!!

Greg

Trump would have to be able to work out deals with Congressmen.

Which he has been doing for 50 years at the local, state AND federal level. His ability to negotiate deals is his strong point... you will never bring him down attacking what he is extremely good at.

An appropriate analogy would be if this were 2008 and I were arguing that Obama would have to stand in front of people and give speeches. Think about how dumb that complaint would sound and you're getting an idea of how dumb you're sounding to me. :)

So this thread has gone on all day, and I'm just dropping in.

Is there anyone that thinks Trump would win a general election, against a Democratic candidate for President?

Anywhere.......only not Trump himself?
