I went to basic training with a former U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Agent who ended up disgusted with the job and left to join the Army after 9/11. He was from the State of WA, was part indian himself and got handed the job because his WW2 Grandfather was an agent, and his Vietnam Vet Dad followed in those footsteps. This dude left that gravy job though, in order to drag a rifle through yet another shitty war because he felt he owed the country. The dude was definitely a rare patriotic breed, hence the fact we ended up kindred spirits in Ft Knox.

Among many of the conversations I recall while hurriedly waiting for hours was his story about how indians were able to use fishing techniques to harvest Steelheads and Salmon that are extremely illegal otherwise because of the gross waste it causes. He asserted in many cases it was either deliberate, or out of laziness that members of these reservations killed thousands of fish. He was pretty passionate about it because he was an avid outdoorsman like his ancestors who all hunted and passed down their values to him.

That's by no means any sort of defense regarding the near annihilation of the Great Plains Buffalo for choice cuts of meat and skins. That was a travesty, as well as how the government treated these Skrælings.
