Freedom!
In fact, the GDR government joined the FRG. Several factors played a role. Not only the demonstrations and riots that occurred after the government already granted free travel to the West, played a role but the economic situation as a whole. The GDR was a powerful economy but it was connected to the mostly suffering economies of the east. Prices rose and rose and the quality of goods declined. For example, in the beginning of the 80´s the GDR ranked third in the percental use of nuclear energy right behind France and West Germany (or was it Japan, instead, dunno anymore). But the buildout has been stalled due to delivery of low quality parts from Russia or nothing at all which caused the Germans to have to develop on their own what actually should be delivered by Russia according to the contracts. The percentage of nuclear energy even declined during the 80´s. The GDR government concluded that the country would not be able to cover the ever growing demand of energy by 1993.CorrectEast Germany was not overthrown.
The East German people made the decision to chart another course for their country.
When and if, the N. Korean people what a change.
That is their business, and not ours. ....![]()
