This is an interesting map. Note, how quick the gains in the east of Syria were made first by "rebel" groups and later by ISIS.

How can we be sure there was much difference between "Free Syrian" forces and IS? I am pretty sure that if Gaddafi had been left alone and won, there wouldn't have been more uprisings.

There wasn´t much difference. The FSA is just as bloodthirsty as ISIS. While the "opposition" claims, ISIS helped the Syrian government to fight it, their fighters just joined ISIS, enabling the group to make rapid gains in Syria and Iraq.
