Why does Trump lie when there is no need.

I think the answer to that is really pretty simple. Two parts:

Part One: At their core, a business owner is a salesperson. They had to be when they were just getting started, and that inclination usually doesn't leave them, even if they don't like selling. A plumber would much rather just plumb, what he does best, than sell plumbing services.

Part Two: There are certainly different types of sales people. Some use logic, others use canned presentations, some use emotion, some center their strategy around integrity & honesty. And some use pure bluster and bullshit, and are willing to say absolutely anything at any time to anyone to get the sale. For them, honesty & integrity are merely a self-imposed handicap, not worth it. Just get the sale now, worry about the rest later.

I'd put Trump in that last category. And in some cases, through simple habit, these people end up operating 24/7 like that, essentially and permanently detached from any personal obligation to be sincere, or accurate, or honest. They might not even know they're like that. I'd put him there, too.
