President Obama's call to increase the federal minimum wage to $9 an hour was one of the more significant proposals he laid out in his State of the Union address Tuesday night. But $9 an hour is still a far cry from what workers really deserve, a 2012 study finds.

The minimum wage should have reached $21.72 an hour in 2012 if it kept up with increases in worker productivity, according to a March study by the Center for Economic and Policy Research. While advancements in technology have increased the amount of goods and services that can be produced in a set amount of time, wages have remained relatively flat, the study points out.

Even if the minimum wage kept up with inflation since it peaked in real value in the late 1960s, low-wage workers should be earning a minimum of $10.52 an hour, according to the study.

Between the end of World War II and the late 1960s, productivity and wages grew steadily. Since the minimum wage peaked in 1968, increases in productivity have outpaced the minimum wage growth.

I get $16.75 an hour after tax, and things are more expensive here, therefore, the minimum wage in the US shouldn't be higher. $10 an hour is the lowest it should be, ideally it would be around $12 per hour.

well, the Hufferpost can put the money where their mouth is and pay all the idiot writers over there 21 bucks a hour...or continue to just RIP THEM OFF

The more they raise the minimum wage, the more expensive goods and products become, thus still keeping low wage earners in their poverty.
What horrible thing to do to our poor and Senior Citizens.

Aannndd we can kiss every job goodbye.

Thanks for the laugh and next time think ahead.

And by think ahead, I mean past what you are doing Friday and what will happen to other people.

I mean, raising it is not a bad thing. We are just not in a position to do so! It will only hurt the middle class when they buy the goods. If you are making minimum wage, not in high school, you are poor. Not middle class.
The liberal reasons for this are BS, as usual.. It contradicts the sole purpose of wanting to do this

Gee.....that isn't what that award-winning conservabimbo says!

Bubblehead Says....

"Tennessee Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R) chose a different reason to oppose the proposal today. A stronger minimum wage, Blackburn said, would negatively affect the ability of young workers to enter the workforce as teenagers, and would prevent them from learning responsibility like she did when she was a teenage retail employee making a seemingly-measly $2.15 an hour in Mississippi.

But what Blackburn didn’t realize is that she accidentally undermined her own argument, since the value of the dollar has changed immensely since her teenage years. Blackburn was born in 1952, so she likely took that retail job at some point between 1968 and 1970. And according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ inflation calculator, the $2.15 an hour Blackburn made then is worth somewhere between $12.72 and $14.18 an hour in today’s dollars, depending on which year she started.

At that time, the minimum wage was $1.60, equivalent to $10.56 in today’s terms. Today’s minimum wage is equivalent to just $1.10 an hour in 1968 dollars, meaning the teenage Blackburn managed to enter the workforce making almost double the wage she now says is keeping teenagers out of the workforce."

You don't pay people for what they think they are worth.
You pay them for what the job is worth and what they know.

Man, you must just HATE the most vulnerable citizens in our country, because that's exactly who is harmed by central price controls on the price of labor:

  • The young worker looking to build his resume
  • The elderly retired person hoping to engage in the workplace
  • The unskilled and/or unintelligent worker whose skill level does not command such a wage
  • The untold thousands of average workers that get replaced by technology or loose their jobs to oversea competitors because it's cheaper for the employer to do so

I think that's just a sick thing to do to these people. Shame on you, and the President.

Besides, why should YOU get to determine what another person is willing to work for? What unbridled arrogance!
